On June 23, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the Charge d'Affaires of Afghanistan in Turkmenistan Mohammad Fazel Saber.

Addressing the Afghan diplomat, the head of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry stressed that Turkmenistan had received the news of the devastating earthquake in the Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika with deep sorrow and expressed sincere condolences and feelings of empathy to the people of this country.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced the readiness of Turkmenistan to provide humanitarian assistance to the population of fraternal Afghanistan in the near future.

On June 23, 2022, political consultations were held in Ashgabat between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The delegation of Turkmenistan was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs B.G. Myatiev, the delegation of Saudi Arabia - by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Abdulkareem El-Khereiji.

During the consultations, the parties discussed key aspects of bilateral cooperation in the political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres, as well as current international issues.

It was noted with satisfaction that Turkmenistan and Saudi Arabia are developing a wide and multi-level political and diplomatic dialogue on strengthening regional and world stability, countering such challenges and threats as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and other types of illegal activities, are stepping up joint efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. In this context, the importance of mutual support within the framework of major international organizations, primarily the UN, was emphasized. It was noted that Saudi Arabia invariably supports the international initiatives of Turkmenistan and is a co-author of many of them. In turn, Turkmenistan also provides support to Saudi Arabia, including on a number of draft resolutions of the General Assembly put forward by this country, as well as in the nomination of Saudi candidates to various UN structures.

A separate topic of discussion was the creation and development of the necessary conditions for attracting investment in various sectors of the economy of Turkmenistan, the implementation of promising infrastructure projects, and industrial cooperation. In particular, it was noted that there are great opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in such areas as petrochemistry and gas chemistry. In this regard, the value of the accumulated experience of cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Saudi Fund for Development was noted.

The parties stressed the importance of further developing cultural and scientific ties, continuing the traditions of holding mutual Days of Culture, and expanding the humanitarian dialogue between the two fraternal peoples.

At the consultations, it was especially emphasized that the official visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Saudi Arabia, preparations for which are currently in full swing, will serve as a powerful impetus for the strengthening and qualitative enrichment of bilateral ties.

Then the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredov.

During the conversation, the parties exchanged views on a wide range of bilateral relations, as well as on the regional and global agenda. It was noted that Turkmenistan and Saudi Arabia are making a great positive contribution to ensuring peace and stability in Central Asia and the Middle East, are pursuing a responsible and far-sighted line aimed at normalizing and stabilizing global processes. The interlocutors agreed to continue the political and diplomatic dialogue, close cooperation in determining approaches to topical issues of world politics.

The head of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry informed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia that Turkmenistan had decided to support the candidacy of Saudi Arabia as the venue for the World Expo 2030 and was ready to assist in the preparation of this important global event.

On June 23, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov had a meeting with the newly appointed Director of the Permanent Representation of the Asian Bank of Development (ABR) in Turkmenistan Artur Andrysiak.

During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the issues of current state of relations between Turkmenistan and the Asian Bank of Development and their prospects. The sides named energy, industry, transport, trade, banking sphere and some others as the directions of cooperation.

Special attention was paid to the realization of the project of the construction of the gas pipeline Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) in the context of regional and international energy cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan having congratulated new Director of the Permanent Representation of the Asian Bank of Development (ABR) in Turkmenistan with appointment, wished him every success in new, responsible assignment.

23 июня 2022 года состоялась встреча Министра иностранных дел Туркменистана Рашида Мередова с Временным Поверенным в делах Афганистана в Туркменистане Мохаммадом Фазелом Сабером.

Обращаясь к афганскому дипломату, руководитель туркменского внешнеполитического ведомства подчеркнул, что в Туркменистане с глубокой скорбью восприняли весть о разрушительном землетрясении в афганских провинциях Хост и Пактика и выразил народу этой страны искренние соболезнования и чувства сопереживания.

Глава МИД также сообщил о готовности Туркменистана к оказанию в ближайшее время гуманитарной помощи населению братского Афганистана.

23 июня 2022 года в Ашхабаде состоялись политические консультации между Министерствами иностранных дел Туркменистана и Королевства Саудовской Аравии. Делегацию Туркменистана возглавил заместитель министра иностранных дел Б.Г.Мятиев, делегацию Саудовской Аравии - заместитель министра иностранных дел Валид Абдулкарим Эль-Херейджи.

В ходе консультаций стороны обсудили ключевые аспекты двустороннего сотрудничества в политической, торгово-экономической и культурно-гуманитарной сферах,  актуальиые международные вопрросы.   

Было с удовлетворением констатировано, что Туркменистан и Саудовская Аравия развивают широкий и многоуровневый политико-дипломатический диалог по вопросам укрепления региональной и мировой стабильности, противодействию таким вызовам и угрозам, как терроризм, экстремизм, наркотрафик, другие виды противоправной деятельности, наращивают совместные усилия по реализации целей устойчивого развития. В этом контексте была подчеркнута значимость взаимной поддержки в рамках крупнейших международных организаций, в первую очередь ООН. Отмечалось, что Саудовская Аравия неизменно поддерживает международные инициативы Туркменистана и выступает соавтором многих из них. В свою очередь, Туркменистан также оказывает поддержку Саудовской Арапвии, в том чиле по целому ряду выдвинутых этой страной проектов резолюций Генеральной Ассамблеи, а также при выдвижении саудовских кандидатур в различные структуры ООН.

Отдельной темой обсуждений стало создание и развитие необходимых условий для привлечения инвестиций в различные отрасли экономики Туркменистана, реализации перспективных инфраструктурных проектов, производственной кооперации. Было отмечено, в частности, наличие больших возможностей для сотрудничества двух стран в таких областях, как нефтехимия и газохимия. В этой связи была отмечена ценность накопленного опыта сотрудничества между Правительством Туркменистана и Саудовским Фондом развития.

Стороны подчеркнули важность дальнейшего развития культурных и научных связей, продолжения традиций проведения взаимных Дней культуры, расширения гуманитарного диалога двух братских народов.

На консультациях было особо подчеркнуто, что мощнейшим импульсом укрепления и качественного обогащения двусторонних связей послужит официальный визит Президента Туркменистана в Саудовскую Аравию, подготовка к которому в настоящее время идет полным ходом.

Затем заместитель министра иностранных дел Королевства Саудовской Аравии был принят Министром иностранных дел Туркменистана Р.Мередовым.

В ходе беседы стороны обменялись мнениями по широкому кругу двусторонних отношений, а также региональной и мировой повестки. Было отмечено, что Туркменистан и Саудовская Аравия вносят большой позитивный вклад в обеспечение мира и стабильности в Центральной Азии и на Ближнем Востоке, проводят ответственную и дальновидную линию, нацеленную на нормализацию и стабилизацию общемировых процессов. Собеседники договорились о продолжении политико-дипломатического диалога, тесном взаимодействии при определении подходов к актуальным вопросам мировой политики.

Глава туркменского внешнеполитического ведомства проинформировал заместителя министра иностранных дел Саудовской Аравии о том, что Туркменистан принял решение о поддержке кандидатуры Саудовской Аравии в качестве места проведения Всемирной выставки “ЭКСПО-2030” и готов оказать содействие в подготовке этого важнейшего глобального мероприятия.

23 июня 2022 года Министр иностранных дел Туркменистана Рашид Мередов встретился с новым Директором Постоянного представительства Азиатского Банка Развития (АБР) в Туркменистане Артуром Андрисяком.

В ходе встречи стороны обменялись мнениями по вопросам текущего состояния отношений между Туркменистаном и Азиатским банком развития и их перспективах. В качестве сфер совместного приложения сил были названы энергетика, промышленность, транспорт, торговля, банковская сфера и ряд других направлений.

Особый акцент был сделан на реализации проекта строительства газопровода Туркменистан-Афганистан-Пакистан-Индия (ТАПИ), в контексте развития регионального и международного энергетического сотрудничества.

Министр иностранных дел Туркменистана поздравив нового Директора Постоянного представительства Азиатского Банка Развития в Туркменистане, пожелал ему успехов в предстоящей ответственной работе.

On 23 June, EU leaders meeting in the European Council agreed to grant Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status.

“A historic moment. Today marks a crucial step on your path towards the EU,” wrote European Council President Charles Michel on Twitter. “Congratulations to Zelenskyy and Maia Sandu and the people of Ukraine and Moldova. Our future is together.” 

At the same time, the Council decided to recognise the European perspective of Georgia,  and, according to Michel, “is ready to grant candidate status once the outstanding priorities are addressed”.

The decision follows the Opinions issued by the European Commission on all three EU accession applications on 17 June.

“I am very pleased with the Leaders’ endorsement of our Opinions,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the press conference following the Council. “Of course, the countries all have homework to do before moving to the next stage of the accession process. But I am convinced that they will all move as swiftly as possible and work as hard as possible to implement the necessary reforms.” She added that the changes needed for the EU accession would primarily benefit the states’ democracies, economies and citizens.

“This decision strengthens us all. It strengthens Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, in the face of Russian imperialism and it strengthens the European Union, because it shows once again to the world that we are united and strong in the face of external threats,” said  Ursula von der Leyen.

In their Conclusions adopted on 23 June, EU leaders said:

• The European Council recognises the European perspective of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia. The future of these countries and their citizens lies within the European Union.
• The European Council has decided to grant the status of candidate country to Ukraine and to the Republic of Moldova.
• The Commission is invited to report to the Council on the fulfilment of the conditions specified in the Commission’s opinions on the respective membership applications as part of its regular enlargement package. The Council will decide on further steps once all these conditions are fully met.
• The European Council is ready to grant the status of candidate country to Georgia once the priorities specified in the Commission’s opinion on Georgia’s membership application have been addressed.
• The progress of each country towards the European Union will depend on its own merit in meeting the Copenhagen criteria, taking into consideration the EU’s capacity to absorb new members.
