UNDP and the British Embassy in Turkmenistan convened the third coordination meeting of the Climate Group of Development Partners
Today, UNDP and the British Embassy in Turkmenistan in a hybrid format convened the Development Partners Climate Group Coordination meeting aimed at continuing the established dialogue to support the Government of Turkmenistan in implementing projects and international commitments related to the environment and climate change.
The meeting served as a forum on providing an update on the climate change agenda as well as exchanging information on current initiatives and the next steps to support Turkmenistan’s efforts on tackling climate change and reducing GHG emissions in accordance with its commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
“We are glad to say that the Meeting of development partners on climate change issues has already become a nice tradition to gather and exchange information on current initiatives and discuss opportunities to join efforts in supporting the country on its commitments under various international agreements” – said Ms. Narine Sahakyan, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan. “Tackling the climate crisis requires all parties to make bold pledges under the Paris Agreement on climate. UNDP Turkmenistan is now scaling up its support for Turkmenistan to turn its newly adopted NDC targets into concrete action. We will bring together our resources, knowledge, experience and networks to provide comprehensive support for raising the ambition of the national climate pledge.”
“At COP26, countries seized the opportunity to act. We showed leadership, worked together and embraced progress to agree the historic Glasgow Climate Pact, which kept the goal of global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees alive,” – said Ms. Lucia Wilde, Ambassador of the UK in Turkmenistan. “Despite this progress, six months on from COP26 our aim to keep 1.5 degrees alive remains fragile. We must accelerate delivery, turning targets and commitments into action by phasing down coal and ending inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, as well as revisiting our 2030 emissions reductions targets before COP27 and strengthen them with workable plans if they do not align with the temperature goals set out in the Paris Agreement. We must turn the promises and commitments of the Glasgow Climate Pact into action. Let us now pick up the pace on delivering a net zero, climate-resilient transition ahead of COP27 in Egypt this November”.
“The climate summit in Glasgow last November confirmed the seriousness of states to present their renewed commitments to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, to direct more investment in both mitigation and adaptation to climate change,” – said Mr. Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident coordinator in Turkmenistan during the meeting. “At the same time, there is a common understanding that it is necessary to strengthen international and regional cooperation, including in the area of scientific research, climate technologies and the harmonization of approaches to natural resource management, in order to prevent the climate crisis”.
During the meeting, participants discussed the country’s recently approved Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which was developed with the support of UNDP and the Initiative of Turkmenistan to establish a Climate Mitigating Technologies Centre for the Central Asia in Ashgabat.
The Development Partners Climate Group Coordination meeting is convened regularly serving as a strong coordination mechanism for developing and providing valuable support to Turkmenistan’s efforts on climate action and building resilience.

UN holds consultation on disability rights
As celebrations from the International Day of Persons with Disabilities continue, the Georgia UN Disability Inclusion Group (GUNDIG) invited the organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) in Georgia to highlight accomplishments and discuss challenges that hamper progress towards an inclusive and equal society.
The meeting created a discussion space for UN agencies and organizations of persons with disabilities to exchange ideas and plans for supporting the sustainability of the achieved results.
UN Resident Coordinator Sabine Machl opened a discussion and commended progress towards an inclusive and rights-based environment for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
“We salute progress made so far towards creating a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering environment for persons with disabilities,” said UN Resident Coordinator Sabine Machl. “We look forward to continuing our work in close partnership with people with disabilities to support building an inclusive society. We need to achieve real impact in the implementation of the rights of persons with disabilities and to foster development that creates more opportunities for all.”
The consultation included an overview of priority areas and identifying the specific steps to be taken for advancing the disability agenda in Georgia.
The event featured presentations by Nutsi Odisharia, UNFPA, Ketevan Melkadze, UNICEF, Sophio Benashvili, OHCHR, and Eliso Chabrava, UNDP bringing attention to crucial areas, including biopsychosocial model, access to quality health and social services, with emphasis on the sexual and reproductive health and gender based violence, data management, economic empowerment and full participation and inclusion in society, capacity building of women and young persons with disabilities and organizations of persons with disabilities in all decision-making and development processes.
Representatives from various disability organisations and UN agencies stressed the need for greater effort and commitment to promoting disability rights and inclusivity and monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Georgia. This resonates with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres message for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) that calls on “the world to work side-by-side with persons with disabilities to design and deliver solutions based on equal rights in every country and community”.
The event served as a catalyst for renewed efforts and partnerships, aiming to achieve the ambitious goals of "United in Action to Rescue and Achieve the SDGs for, with and by Persons with Disabilities," the theme of this year's IDPD.
The United Nations in Georgia has been helping to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in Georgia for over three decades. This work has included strengthening the legislative framework and creating an evidence-based policy environment, in alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN has helped to improve systems for quality integrated health and social services and to enhance capacities for data collection, monitoring, and advocacy. The UN excelled in transformation of the disability assessment system, focused on the best interests of persons living with disabilities. At present two joint programmes are being implemented with the support of the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) to strengthen disability inclusive development policy in Georgia.

Turkmenistan Secures its Seat on UN Commission on Population and Development for 2024-2028
During the meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on December 5, 2023, Turkmenistan was unanimously elected to the Commission on Population and Development for the term 2024-2028.
With strong support from the Council’s members, Turkmenistan now extends its membership in the Commission for the next consecutive period continuing its terms of 2016-2020 and 2020-2024.
As one of ECOSOC's ten functional commissions, the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) assumes a vital role as the supervisory, coordinating, and advisory body on matters related to population, statistics, and the integration of global policies into national and regional programs.
The permanent secretariat of the commission operates under the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Representatives from the State Committee of Turkmenistan on Statistics annually participate in the regular sessions of the Commission in New York.

The delegation of Turkmenistan took part in the work of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
From 5 to 9 December 2023, the 18th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is taking place in Kasane, Republic of Botswana.
The delegation of Turkmenistan led by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Ch. Rustemova took part in this session.
On December 5, 2023, as part of the event, based on broad consensus, without voting, the above Committee unanimously decided to include the nomination of Turkmenistan “The Art of Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding and the Traditions of Horse Decoration” in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage humanity.
After the decision was made, the delegation of Turkmenistan expressed gratitude to the members of the Committee and representatives of delegations for supporting the nomination of Turkmenistan and made a presentation on the Art of Akhal-Teke horse breeding and the tradition of horse decoration, which was warmly received by the evaluation commission of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Туркменистан избран в Комиссию ООН по народонаселению и развитию на 2024-2028 годы
5 декабря 2023 года в ходе очередного заседания Экономического и Социального Совета ООН (ЭКОСОС) Туркменистан был единогласно избран в состав Комиссии по народонаселению и развитию на период 2024-2028 годов.
Благодаря поддержке членов Совета Туркменистан в настоящее время выполняет функции члена Комиссии в течение двух последовательных сроков: 2016-2020 и 2020-2024 годы.
Комиссия по народонаселению и развитию (CPD) является одной из десяти функциональных комиссий ЭКОСОС, являясь контролирующим, координирующим и консультативным органом Совета по таким вопросам, как проблемы и тенденции в области народонаселения и статистики, интеграция глобальных стратегий в этой сфере в национальные и региональные программы и планы.
Постоянным секретариатом комиссии является Отдел народонаселения Департамента ООН по экономическим и социальным вопросам.
Руководители Государственного комитета Туркменистана по статистике ежегодно принимают участие в сессиях Комиссии в г.Нью-Йорке.

Делегация Туркменистана приняла участие в работе Межправительственного комитета ЮНЕСКО по охране нематериального культурного наследия
С 5 по 9 декабря 2023 года, в городе Касане, Республика Ботсвана, проходит 18-ая сессия Межправительственного комитета ЮНЕСКО по охране нематериального культурного наследия.
В работе данной сессии приняла участие делегация Туркменистана во главе с Ответственным секретарем Национальной комиссии Туркменистана по делам ЮНЕСКО Ч.Рустемовой.
5 декабря 2023 года, в рамках мероприятия, на основе широкого консенсуса, без проведения голосования вышеуказанный Комитет единогласно принял решение о включении номинации Туркменистана «Искусство Ахалтекинского коневодства и традиции украшения коней» в Репрезентативный список нематериального культурного наследия человечества.
После принятия решения делегация Туркменистана выразила признательность членам Комитета и представителям делегаций за поддержку номинации Туркменистана и провела презентацию об Искусстве Ахалтекинского коневодства и традиции украшения коней, которая была тепло принята оценочной комиссией Межправительственного комитета по охране нематериального культурного наследия.
