TURKMENISTAN ELECTED TO THE POST OF VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR EUROPE

In the period from 20 to 21 April 2021, a meeting of the 69th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was held in Geneva. The event brought together representatives at the level of ministers and deputy ministers from UNECE member countries to exchange best practices in the field of circular economy and set its course over the next two years.

During the high-level segment on the topic "Encouraging the development of a circulating economy and sustainable use of natural resources in the region of the Economic Commission for Europe", the Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan M. Serdarov made a speech on behalf of the Turkmen side.

In his speech, Minister M. Serdarov noted that the transition to a circulating economy based on maximizing added value will be possible if control over reserves of natural resources is strengthened and a sustainable balance of renewable resources is observed to preserve and maintain natural capital at an inexhaustible level.

On April 21, 2021, in the afternoon, elections were held for the post of Chairperson and Vice-Chairpersons of the Commission from among the UNECE member states.

By unanimous decision, the following countries were elected as Chairperson and Vice-Chairpersons of the UNECE for the period 2021-2023: Chairman - Republic of Austria; Vice-Chairmen - Swiss Confederation and Turkmenistan.

Minister of Finance Ivane Machavariani steps down

Minister of Finance Ivane Machavariani has resigned. Machavariani posted the relevant statement on the social network.

Machavariani did not name a reason for his resignation, but explained that he planned to step down at the end of last year, but the decision was postponed for several months due to the important negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and the crisis budget approval process.

“I would like to announce my decision to resign as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. I have to say that after almost three years of working as the Minister of Finance, I was planning to resign at the end of last year, but due to the 2021 crisis budget approval procedure and important negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, I decided to wait for several months.

It was an honor for me and at the same time a great responsibility to work with the Georgian Dream political team - with government leaders, with my colleagues in the Cabinet of Ministers, with members of parliament”, reads the Machavariani’s statement.

Today we celebrate the signing of the two strategic treaties between Japan and Georgia, which will bring economic cooperation of the two countries to the next level: so-called “Investment Treaty” will significantly broaden the capabilities of economic partnership through liberalization of investment, while the so-called “Tax Treaty” will create beneficial environment for economic partnerships, through exemption from the double taxation for both countries. Those are the first such treaties since the independence of Georgia.
Ambassador IMAMURA: “Georgia's favorable business environment has been highly acclaimed internationally and Japanese companies are becoming more interested in Georgia. The conclusion of these two treaties will enable Japanese businesses to invest in Georgia with more stability and it is expected that economic cooperation between Japan and Georgia will become more active.”
The so-called “Investment Treaty” (Agreement between Japan and Georgia for the Liberalization, Promotion and Protection of Investment) was signed with the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia – Ms. Natia Turnava, while the so-called “Tax Treaty” (Convention between Japan and Georgia for the Elimination of Double Taxation with Respect to Taxes on Income and the Prevention of Tax Evasion and Avoidance) was signed with the Minister of Finance of Georgia – Ivane Matchavariani, on January 29/2021. Ambassador IMAMURA Akira was the signatory on behalf of the Government of Japan.

Dimitry Kumsishvili will attend the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC

First Vice-Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Finance Mr. Dimitry Kumsishvili, will attend the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. During the visit Minister will also meet other International Finance Organizations and investor companies.

Mr. Dimitry Kumsishvili as a Minister of Finance as well as Governor for Georgia at World Bank Group, will meet high level officials from the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.

First Vice-Minister, Minister of Finance of Georgia Mr. Dimitry Kumsishvili will meet with Katarína Mathernova, Deputy Director-General of Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, where EU-Georgia cooperation topics will be discussed.

Minister Kumsishvili will meet various business representatives attending Spring Meetings 2017. 

From the Georgian side meeting will be attended by Mr. Nikoloz Gagua, Deputy Minister of Finance.
