GLOBALink | China's westernmost airport opens in Xinjiang

Published in CHINA
Friday, 23 December 2022 16:39

URUMQI, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A passenger aircraft on Friday morning arrived in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, marking the inauguration of the region's first high plateau airport.

Departing from the regional capital Urumqi at 8:57 a.m., the flight CZ5193, operated by China Southern Airlines, landed at the Taxkorgan Airport at 10:59 a.m. The airport, located at 3,258 meters above sea level, is China's westernmost transportation airport.

"A round-trip flight between Urumqi and Taxkorgan has been opened now," said Chen Xiaoguo, general manager of the airport, adding that more airlines will soon join.

Equipped with a 3,800-meter runway, the airport is designed to handle an annual throughput of 160,000 passengers and 400 tonnes of cargo and mail.

Taxkorgan is the only Tajik autonomous county in China, with more than 80 percent of its roughly 40,000 residents belonging to the Tajik ethnic group. Inaccessibility to convenient and efficient transport once restrained Taxkorgan's socio-economic development.

The construction of Taxkorgan Airport began in 2020, with an investment of more than 1.6 billion yuan (about 229 million U.S. dollars).

"In the past, I needed to travel 40 to 50 hours by bus and train to get to Beijing. Thanks to the new airport, the plane has slashed the time to only eight hours," said Mirsayip Nuralip, a local Tajik resident who attended college in Beijing.

The convenient air passage will bring a steady flow of people, logistics and information to the Pamir Plateau, promoting industrial development on the plateau, said Zapar Atawulla, head of the county government.

"The airport will also play a positive role in improving the local transport, promoting local tourism and opening up to the outside world," he added.

GLOBALink | Projects see deepened collaboration between China and Europe

Wednesday, 21 December 2022 17:21

Many cooperation projects, big and small, have witnessed the deepened economic and trade exchanges between China and Europe.

In the Lynk&Co Yuyao plant of Geely Auto Group in east China, brand-new vehicles are moving orderly on the production line.

During Dec. 1-18, over 4,400 vehicles were delivered from Ningbo Port, Shanghai Nangang Port and other Chinese ports, arriving at Belgium's Port of Zeebrugge in a month.

On Dec. 15, the X8026 "Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe" freight train (Geely special express) loaded with 100 TEUs of auto parts departed from Yiwu, heading to Belarusian capital Minsk.

Till Tuesday, a total of 1,559 "Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe" trains have left the Yiwu platform this year, with a year-on-year growth of 24.5 percent.

Since autumn, small heating facilities such as electric blankets and fan heaters have gained noticeable popularity in Europe, most of which are produced in China.

Data from e-commerce giant Alibaba showed that at the peak of export, the demand for heating appliances increased by nearly 50 percent year-on-year, and most products would go to the Netherlands, France, Germany and Poland.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, in the first 10 months of 2022, China-EU trade value hit 711.4 billion U.S. dollars, up 6.3 percent year-on-year.

China remains the largest trading partner of the European Union (EU), and the EU remains China's second-largest trading partner.

FRANKFURT, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A German expert has said that the idea of reducing dependency on China, which is being peddled by some politicians, is a geopolitical plot, and would amount to "economic suicide" for Germany.

She added that even the world economy would suffer the consequences.

In a Xinhua interview, Helga Zepp-LaRouche, founder and chairwoman of the German think tank Schiller Institute, warned that attempt by Germany to reduce its economic dependency on China under the pressure of the United States will plunge the country into turmoil and put its economy at great peril.

Zepp-LaRouche added that Germany should expand its cooperation with China in many areas.
