Angela Merkel to address PACE Spring session

Strasbourg, 15.04.2021 – On the occasion of the German Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth will participate in the spring session of PACE (19-22 April 2021) which will take place in a hybrid format, allowing members to participate remotely or attend in person in Strasbourg.

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, and the Secretary General of the organisation, Marija Pejčinović Burić, will also address PACE.

At this session, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, will present her 2020 annual report and the Assembly will award its Václav Havel Human Rights Prize.

There have been requests for urgent debates on "The arrest and detention of Alexei Navalny in January 2021" and on "The functioning of democratic institutions in Turkey".

Topics on the agenda include a debate on the Assembly's vision of the Council of Europe's strategic priorities and a joint debate on human rights violations and the need for electoral reform in Belarus.

The OECD's work on taxing the digital economy with the participation of its Secretary General Ángel Gurría, discrimination against persons dealing with chronic and long-term illnesses, post-monitoring dialogue with Montenegro, the preservation of national minorities and a European policy on diasporas will also be discussed.

The Assembly will decide its final agenda on the opening day of the session.

Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany congratulated Irakli Garibashvili on his appointment as the Prime Minister of Georgia.

According to the congratulatory letter, Germany will further continue to support economic development of Georgia, along with its pro-European reforms and territorial integrity.

"Your Excellency, congratulations on your re-appointment as Prime Minister of Georgia. Very good bilateral relations between our countries create a credible framework for trusting cooperation between our governments.

Germany is following the current political negotiations in your country with keen interest and will continue to support economic development of Georgia, its pro-European reforms and territorial integrity.

I wish you every success in your demanding role at the time full of unusual challenges" reads the letter.

German Chancellor starts official visit to Georgia

German Chancellor’s Angela Merkel plane has already landed at Tbilisi International Airport, where she will be greeted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Davit Zalkaliani and Ambassador of Georgia to Germany Elguja Khokrishvili.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, President Giorgi Margvelashvili and oppositional representatives within the framework of her official visit to Georgia on August 23-24.

On August 24, German Chancellor will meet with representatives of Georgian oppositional parties and German soldiers who participated in 2018 Noble Partner military training.

The German delegation includes State Secretary Steffen Seibert, also the government spokesperson as well as head of the Press and Information Office, H.E. Heike Peitsch, Ambassador of Germany to Georgia, Jan Hecker, foreign policy adviser to German Chancellor, Matthias Lüttenberg, Head of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe as well as Central Asia and Southern Caucasus of the German Federal Chancellery and other officials.

Upcoming visit of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany to Georgia, bilateral relations and key aspects of European and Euro-Atlantic integration agenda of Georgia were predominantly discussed by Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia and H.E. Dr. Heike Renate Peitsch, Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary Ambassador of Germany to Georgia at the Government Administration today.

Prime Minister noted that Government deems the upcoming official visit of H.E. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany as the most important event in developing the bilateral relations.

Head of the Government of Georgia stressed the most significant role of Germany in the institutional building of the country.

Focus was made on the trade and economic links, increasing investments from Germany to Georgia and significance of education in ensuring the sustainable economic growth and development.

Discussions were also related to the measures intended by the Government of Georgia for the facilitation of small and medium enterprises (SME), aimed at the job creation and poverty eradication. German diplomat praised the Environmental Vision of the Prime Minister of Georgia on Green Economy.

Head of the Government of Georgia and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany spoke about the upcoming presidential elections. Prime Minister noted that Government pledges to ensure the free, fair and transparent environment this time again in line with the high standards of democracy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Giorgi Kvirikashvili on his reelection to the Office of Prime Minister. Angela Merkel wished the Head of Georgian Government success in achieving his goals, emphasizing that Georgia could count on support from Germany.
"Dear Mr. Prime Minister, please accept my sincere congratulations on your reelection. Next year marks the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between our countries and the 200th anniversary of the settlement in Georgia of German immigrants from Swabia. Both anniversaries demonstrate the traditional close ties between Germany and Georgia.
