Change of Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Georgia: August 2020

Mr Mark Clayton has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Georgia in succession to Mr Justin McKenzie Smith who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Clayton will take up his appointment during August 2020.

DEVELOPMENT OF BILATERAL COOPERATION BETWEEN TURKMENISTAN AND GEORGIA IN THE TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS SECTOR

On April 9, 2020, a telecast was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, teachers and students of the Institute of International Relations, as well as leaders and representatives of the Turkmen Logistics Association, government agencies “Türkmendemirýollary”, “Türkmenawtoulaglary”, Türkmenhowaýollary, Türkmendeňizderýaýollary”.

From the Georgian side the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia A. Sagirashvili took part via video link, as well as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Turkmenistan M. Murdzhikneli participated to the meeting.

According to the participants of this event, the transport sector is one of the key vectors of bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and Georgia. This interaction is based on the coincidence of the positions of the parties on the creation of transport and transit corridors between Asia and Europe.

Also the parties discussed the existing and planned transport corridors, the possibilities of delivering goods to European ports, the work done to date and the prospects for cooperation between Turkmenistan and Georgia.

Following the presentation ceremony, the parties discussed a broad spectrum of Georgia-U.S. strategic partnership. It was highlighted that cooperation between the two countries is at an all-time high. Disucssions focused on various priority areas of cooperation, including defence and security, trade and economy. 
 
The Minister updated the Ambassador on the grave security and humanitarian situation in Georgia’s occupied territories. Conversations also included the importance of the international community’s support for ensuring the peaceful resolution of the Russia-Georgia conflict. While on the theme of the Geneva International Discussions, the parties highlighted that, while Georgia continues to exercise a constructive approach, the Russian Federation’s activities are far from aiming to achieve progress in this format.
 
The Parties also discussed issues relating to regional security, Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration process and its contribution towards ensuring global security.
 
The Ambassador reaffirmed the United States’ firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for its Euro-Atlantic integration.

Ambassador Li Yan, together with Georgian Prime Minister, attends the official opening ceremony of Chinese-built thermal power plant

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia, Li Yan, together with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, was invited to attend the official opening ceremony of Gardabani II Thermal Power Plant, constructed by China Tianchen Engineering Corporation, and deliver a speech. Natia Turnava, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Yuan Xuemin, President of China Tianchen Engineering Corporation and others have also attended the opening ceremony.

The Georgian side highly praised and expressed their gratitude towards Chinese constructors for their excellent quality projects completed at a record pace. Also, they pointed out, that Gardabani Thermal Power Plant is the largest cycle, energy-efficient power station in Georgia, which can meet 70% of average monthly electricity consumption in Tbilisi, improve the energy stability and security in Georgia. At the same time, it will create many job opportunities; contribute to the economic development of the country and peaceful life of its residents.

After the opening ceremony, Ambassador Li Yan and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia visited the Power Plant and saw the equipment.

On January 10, 2020, the meeting of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Georgia Mr. D. Muratov with the President of Georgia Her Excellency Mrs. S. Zourabichvili was held at the “Orbeliani” Presidential Palace.

In the beginning of the meeting, the Ambassador conveyed the invitation letter of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov addressed to the President of Georgia and inviting her to participate to the International Conference «Policy of Neutrality and its importance in ensuring international peace, security and sustainable development», dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Neutrality, which will be held on December 11-12, 2020 in Ashgabat.

During the conversation, the parties noted the vital role of the policy of permanent Neutrality implemented under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan and aimed at ensuring peace, international security and sustainable development.

The bilateral relations in political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres were also discussed.

New U.S. Ambassador to Georgia sworn in

Kelly Degnan was sworn in as new U.S. Ambassador to Georgia at the U.S. Department of State.

David Hale, the United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs attended the oath-taking ceremony.

The White House presented the candidacy of Kelly Degnan for post of U.S. Ambassador to Georgia in September of 2019. The Senate approved Degnan’s candidacy in December.

Degnan previously served as a political adviser to the commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-U.S. Naval Forces Africa. A native of California, Degnan’s career has spanned 25 years and has included senior diplomatic postings to Italy, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

Degnan also served as the deputy executive secretary of the State Department, political counsellor at the U.S. mission to NATO, and special assistant to the secretary of state. Degnan speaks Italian, French, Turkish, and Urdu.

Elizabeth Rood has served as acting ambassador to Georgia since Ambassador Ian Kelly departed in March 2018.

PRIME MINISTER OF GEORGIA MEETS NEW AMBASSADOR OF CHINA

Chinese people respects the choice made by Georgian people to live in a unified Georgia" stated Li Yan, newly appointed Ambassador of the People's Republic of China at an introductory meeting with Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia today.

Madam diplomat focused on the support of China towards sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, inter alia through international formats.

Meeting held at the Government Administration of Georgia gave rise to discussions related to the prospects of intensified interaction between Georgia and China to cover both economic and people-to-people relations.

Growing inflow of tourists from China was positively viewed and noted that number of visitors has been increased by 50 percent in the first half of the current year. This indicator is expected to rise further by the end of 2019.

Positive trend of bilateral trade has been underlined. Attention was made on the significance of Georgia's participation in the China International Import Expo. It was thereby noted that it will be yet another annual opportunity given to the Georgian companies to showcase their output to Chinese investors.

Silk Road Forum has also been discussed at the meeting within the initiative of One Belt - One Road. Significant role of Georgia as a regional hub has been stressed towards this end.

The meeting of Archil Talakvadze with the newly appointed Ambassador of People’s Republic of China

The Speaker, H.E. Archil Talakvadze held the introductory meeting with the newly appointed Ambassador of China to discuss the bilateral relations and the cooperation agenda.

As noted, political, trade-economic, cultural and people-to-people relations are the directions Georgia and China are to adhere to in further cooperation.

The parties dwelt on the Silk Road Project “One Belt One Road”, which is of the strategic importance for Georgia and Georgia, in terms of security, economic integration and infrastructural update is committed for this mission.

The parties touched upon transit and investment capacities of Georgia and stressed importance of inter-Parliamentary ties.

The Ambassador reaffirmed support to territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and underlined that China strongly respects the choice Georgian people has opted for development. In his turn, the Speaker expressed intact support of Georgia to “One-China” policy.

The Speaker wished good luck to the Ambassador and expressed commitment for close cooperation.

The meeting was attended by the Head of Georgia-China Friendship GroupOtar Danelia.

Ambassador Hartzell and State Minister Tsikhelashvili visit teachers in Pankisi

On Friday 22 February, EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell travelled to the North of the Kakheti region of Georgia. Together with Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, he met with a group of schoolteachers and principals who had visited Brussels on a recent study trip.

The Ambassador and the State Minister visited a state school in Birkiani and engaged in a lively conversation with both teachers and local schoolchildren. Later in the day, the 20 teachers who travelled to Brussels recently shared not only their impressions of Europe, but also some delicious traditional food from the local area of Pankisi.

“Earlier this month, teachers from Pankisi travelled to the European Union. Today the European Union visited Pankisi,” Ambassador Hartzell said. “I am truly grateful for the warm hospitality that I encountered here, and I am convinced that the teachers will spread their newly gained knowledge about the EU among their students and communities.”

During the visit to Pankisi, Ambassador Hartzell and State Minister Tsikhelashvili sat down together with representatives of local authorities, the Council of Elders and the Women's Council to discuss current issues in the Pankisi community.
