IOM trains Georgian Officials to identify fraudulent Documents at Border Checkpoints
An EU-funded project implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has held a training course for frontline officers from Georgia’s Patrol Police as part of a strategic plan by the Ministry of Interior to create a higher level of document handling expertise at all border checkpoints and to improve standards of fraud detection.
During the training, a group of experienced Georgian officials received extensive instruction in document security and fraud.
"Officers were tested on forged and counterfeit documents with restrictions to replicate the pressures at border checkpoints," a press release said, adding: "The course ended with a classroom based paper examination followed by each participant examining two travel documents without reference to any advice from others".
The EU has a strategic partnership with the IOM, based on a shared interest in bringing the benefits of well-managed international migration to migrants and society. In the Neighbourhood East, common projects include developing effective readmission mechanisms in the South Caucasus and supporting the Eastern Partnership Panel on Migration and Asylum
EU and IOM donate fast response boats to Georgia’s coast guard
On 16 June, the European Union and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) donated four modern boats to Georgia’s Coast Guard.
These rapide response boats with a total cost of around 5 million laris will be deployed in Poti and Batumi. They will support the Coast Guard in patrolling coastal waters and conducting effective search and rescue operations, as well as to enhance interdiction capabilities.
The main technical specifications of the boats have been tailored to the needs of the Coast Guard to ensure compatibility with the maritime surveillance equipment and systems already in place in Georgia.
“Safe and secure borders are key for citizens in Georgia, as in any country. Ensuring security of and around the Black Sea – the physical bridge between the EU and Georgia – is a shared priority for both Georgia and the EU,” said Catalin Gherman, from the EU Delegation to Georgia, during the ceremony in Poti.
The boats were donated within the project ‘Support to Integrated Border Management in Georgia’, implemented by the IOM in the framework of the EU’s ‘EU4 Security, Accountability and Fight against Crime in Georgia’ (SAFE) programme.

Diaspora Business Forum is held in Georgia
The Diaspora Business Forum is held on 10, 11 and 12 December, through the financial support of the European Union, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
The forum aims to promote the involvement of the diaspora in the economic development of the country, to stimulate cooperation between compatriots living abroad and local businesses, to establish business contacts and to increase access to new markets for local businesses. The participants of the event - compatriots living abroad and foreign guests - have the opportunity to get acquainted with the investment and entrepreneurial environment of Georgia, state programs and initiatives to support business.
The opening part of the Diaspora Business Forum took place on 10 December at the Biltmore Hotel Tbilisi. EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzel greeted the participants with a video address. The forum was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Vladimer Konstantinidi and the IOM Georgia Chief of Mission, Sanja Celebic-Lokovac. The event was attended by state agencies ("Produce in Georgia", Georgian Agency for Innovation and Technology), representatives of the private sector and up to 15 diaspora communities from Germany, France, Canada, U.S. and foreign guests.
Aspects of cooperation reviewed at video conference session with International Migration Organization
Development of constructive cooperation between Turkmenistan and International Migration Organization has been reviewed at the video conference sessions with IMO Regional Coordinator for Central Asia Zeynal Gajiyev held in the Foreign Ministry and the State Migration Service.
Realization of joint programmes planned in the next year has been discussed in details. Having noted importance of National Action Plan of Turkmenistan for combating of human trafficking in 2020 – 2022 approved by the Resolution of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov last December, the participants of the meeting spoke for intensification of productive relations.
Being a full member of the world community and having joined number of basic international documents regulating provision of rights and freedoms of people, our country strictly follows undertaken obligations and demonstrates commitment to high principles of humanity, democratic development and modern legal society.
Having highlighted the efficiency of cooperation in international formats, the sides stated the necessity of coordination of activities for solution of current objectives in this sphere as well as for response to emergency situations.
Special attention will be paid to strengthening of measures of regulation of migration, development of international cooperation including search for practical solution of problems in this sphere and provision of humanitarian aid to those who needs it.

Georgia: EU project delivers anti-fraud training to migrations officersThe International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has provided training on document security for visa and consular officials from the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the EU-funded “More for More” project. The anti-fraud training was delivered last week to officials currently serving in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kuwait, China, Qatar, South Africa and Jordan.Core subjects included document security features, document abuse and impostor detection. Participants were able to engage in active discussions on how to deal with false documents submitted in support of visa applications, passport examination and applications for residence permits. The three-day training was specifically planned by IOM to gather core actors in the border management chain and to obtain a clear understanding of the shared challenges being faced.The IOM is the leading intergovernmental organisation in the field of migration dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. Project follows success of disaster response e-platform emergency.lu
Luxembourg, 2 November, 2016 – SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that it has been selected by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to create a digital emergency manual, in a project funded by the Luxembourg Government.
IOM, which carries out humanitarian operations globally to address the most urgent needs of displaced populations, updated its emergency manual in 2016 to further support its crisis response operations. To ensure this information can be regularly updated and shared effectively with field staff, IOM has also created an electronic platform which can share information with all stakeholders in real-time. The new platform is due to be launched in November.
SES was chosen to create the digital platform for the emergency manual due to its expertise in delivering similar emergency manual digital platforms for crisis response and humanitarian operations via its emergency.lu solution. Emergency.lu provides connectivity and applications for humanitarian interventions via dedicated SES satellite capacity and communication infrastructure. Its recent success with a similar project for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) helped IOM to select SES.
