PARLIAMENT ELECTING CEC CHAIR WITH 85 VOTES
The Parliament elected the Chairman of the Central Election Commission and two members of the commission. They announced it recently.
In the primary ballot, two candidates for the CEC chairmanship: Tengiz Tevzadze and Giorgi Kalandarishvili, failed to get two-thirds (100) votes in the full parliament.
According to the law, Giorgi Kalandarishvili was elected as the Chairman of the Central Election Commission for a term of 6 months by 84 votes against 2 in the second round of voting.
As for the election of professional members of the CEC - the MPs voted for 4 candidates for 2 vacant positions - Kristine Kajaia, Levan Isakadze, Maia Zaridze and Gia Tsatsashvili.
Similar to the election of the CEC Chairpaerson, none of the candidates managed to get 2/3 of the votes in the primary ballot.
As a result of repeated vote, Maia Zaridze was elected as a member of the Central Election Commission with 79 votes against 2 and Gia Tsatsashvili with 77 votes against 2, also for 6 months.

GEORGIA HOSTS THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE OF THE PARLIAMENT OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC
The President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Miloš Vystrčil serves the official visit to Georgia accompanied by the Delegation. According to the administration of the Parliament of Georgia a high-level guest was met by the First Vice-Speaker, Giorgi Volski and the Head of the Georgia-Czech Friendship Group, Irakli Chikovani at the Airport.
RNDr. Vystrčil will hold his first meeting of the visit with the Speaker, H.E. Shalva Papuashvili. After the meeting, the Speakers will make a joint statement for the media.
The visit of Czech politicians also includes the meetings with the Parliamentary opposition Factions, Political Groups and the Majority MPs. The Czech MPs will also meet with their Georgian counterparts.
The visit envisages the participation of RNDr. Vystrčil in the opening ceremony of the Czech-Georgian Business Forum. The Czech MPs will visit the village Odzisi at the occupation line. The meetings are scheduled with the representatives of the executive authority.

Question about the day’s meetings
Ambassador Degnan: We had a very good discussion about what’s happening in the region, the very serious and tragic war that was started by Mr. Putin and the Kremlin that is killing thousands of children and Ukrainian citizens out of completely unprovoked aggression. We also discussed my recent meetings in Washington and the mood there, and the support that there is in Washington for Georgia during this very critical time. It’s always important to stay in touch with all the political parties here, and to be able to convey the United States’ support for Georgia and our concerns regarding what’s going on in Ukraine: the very important message that we all need to be standing together in the face of this unprovoked Russian aggression.
Question about sanctions in relation to 2008 and today
Ambassador Degnan: In 2008, it’s important to remember there were a billion dollars in support allocated for Georgia, and there has been considerable investment by my country and other countries in helping Georgia strengthen its deterrence capabilities. The Georgia Defense Forces are quite a bit stronger than in 2008 as a result of the strong security cooperation and partnership that Georgia has with the United States and other friends of Georgia. In this situation, now, what is really important is that we all show a unified front to this Russian aggression that is killing thousands of Ukrainian civilians and devastating Ukrainian towns. The sanctions are intended to influence Russia’s behavior, and I would just say clearly, no one is asking Georgia’s government to come up with bilateral sanctions if they don’t want to, if that’s not what they’ve decided they should do. Bilateral sanctions are for Georgia’s government to decide. What is expected of every country, my country, and every country that is standing against this Russian aggression is that there will be compliance with the international sanctions regime, and Georgia has always been a good partner in complying with international sanctions, whether against Iran or other countries that are working against the interests of countries like Georgia and the United States and all of our countries that believe in freedom and stability and security.
So, again, I think it’s important not to confuse the issues here about what we’re talking about when we’re talking about complying with international sanctions. Georgia is complying with international sanctions. Many of the sanctions may not affect Georgia directly. So I think it’s important to keep this in perspective and understand that Georgia, just like most countries, will be complying with international sanctions to the extent they can. There are consequences for any country that doesn’t comply with an international sanctions regime. We all know that. So, again, I think that the key thing here is that we all are sending a unified message of support to Ukraine, and one of the ways to do that is by complying with the international sanctions regimes.
Question about the proposed road from Chechnya to Georgia
Ambassador Degnan: Regarding the road, my understanding is this is a project that dates back to the Soviet times, to the 1970s or eighties. But in any case, before Russia starts talking about roads, projects, or promises like that to Georgia, they should fulfill their obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement and withdraw their forces from Georgian territory. I think if you want to judge Russia’s sincerity on any of the promises or statements that they’re making, look at what they’re doing in terms of their obligations under the 2008 agreement. They have not fulfilled any of them.

PARLIAMENT ADOPTING RESOLUTION ON POSSIBLE MILITARY ESCALATION IN UKRAINE
At Today’s Plenary Session, the Parliament adopted the Resolution on Possible Military Escalation in Ukraine with 74 votes.
The document developed by the members of the Parliamentary Majority Giorgi Khelashvili, Maka Botchorishvili, Levan Karumidze, Givi Mikanadze and Tamar Taliashvili was introduced to the MPs by the First Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Giorgi Khelashvili.
The Parliament, according to the resolution, expresses grave concern about a possible military escalation in Ukraine and condemns any intention directed against a sovereign state and its territorial integrity, which poses a new threat not only to Ukraine but also to regional peace and security.
The resolution further notes that the Georgian Parliament urges on the Georgian government to continue its contribution to the prevention of war in Ukraine by using diplomatic instruments and working closely with strategic partners.
The majority of the opposition, according to Giorgi Khelashvili, is attempting to avoid supporting important state resolutions by providing an excuse rather than a cause.
According to him, the same thing happened to the constitutional record that backed Georgia's integration into the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic area, such as the Parliamentary resolution on foreign policy that referred to Russia as Georgia's occupier, but the UNM refused to endorse it.
Giorgi Khelashvili once again addressed the opposition before the discussion and called for support for the document.
"The opposition, led by the United National Movement, is almost unanimously opposed to the resolution. This is disappointing, because it would be desirable for us to pass a resolution with the support of all political forces. We can boldly conclude that the aim of the opposition is not to participate in the development of real foreign policy, but only political manipulation. I call on other political parties and factions, if not the National Movement, to take a historical perspective and vote for this resolution, because years later, their signatures will not be found on this resolution”, - Giorgi Khelashvili said.
Most of the opposition MPs demanded from the initiators of the draft that the text of the resolution clearly state the Russian Federation, saying that the document would gain support only in this case and would not remain just a one-party document of the ruling team.
