Irakli Garibashvili: Strong strategic partnership between Georgia and the US is key to regional and Euro-Atlantic security

In today's geopolitical environment, the strong strategic partnership between Georgia and the US is key to the two countries' shared interests and regional and Euro-Atlantic security, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated during today's meeting with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Erika Olson. The Head of Government emphasized the unwavering bipartisan US support for Georgia enabling the country to achieve considerable progress across a variety of directions and to press on the right track toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The meeting focused on the security environment and challenges in the Black and South Caucasus regions.
The Prime Minister singled out the importance of political stability in Georgia, also underlining that, now that the recent elections are over, it is crucial to concentrate on the agenda of the country's development.
Irakli Garibashvili also pointed out that Georgia remains a loyal and reliable ally of the United States in the region. The parties discussed the situation in Georgia's occupied territories and the threats posed by occupation, also the daily humanitarian problems encountered by the citizens on either side of the occupation line. Special attention was paid to the importance of ensuring peace and stability in the region. In this context, the meeting highlighted the Peaceful Neighborhood Initiative-a new peace format proposed by the Prime Minister of Georgia in the UN-and the importance of the engagement of American and European partners in this process. The American side also underscored Georgia's tremendous contribution to the recent evacuation effort from Afghanistan. The conversation also revolved around Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration and the reforms implemented to that end. The Head of Government expressed hope that concrete steps will be taken in the nearest future to start the implementation of the decision of the NATO Summit in Bucharest.

The meeting at the Administration of the Government was attended by US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan and Georgian Vice Prime Minister/Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

    Today, on January 26, 2022, the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Turkmenistan Metthew Stephen Klimow was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

    During the meeting, the parties considered a wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as touched upon international and regional topics of mutual interest.

    The diplomats also exchanged views on the agenda of the annual bilateral consultations planned to be held in the near future.

    Drawing attention to the importance of economic cooperation between the two countries, the parties stressed the need to hold the next meeting of the Turkmen-American Business Council in 2022.

    Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia met H.E. Fatma Ceren Yazgan, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Georgia today.

    Discussion was focused on the strategic partnership between the two countries and positive trend of bilateral relations.

    One of the topics discussed by the dignitaries was the opening of the Turkish sales market and import of high-quality medication with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) to Georgia, which will significantly and quickly drop prices on the pharmaceutical products in Georgia.

    It was highlighted that current regional projects between Georgia and Turkey serve as a vivid example of effective strategic cooperation, solid development and reliable partnership, which thereby leads to greater economic freedom, security and sustainability. Prime Minister of Georgia noted that effective regional cooperation with neighbouring countries is in fact a road leading to security, stability and sustainable development.

    Readiness was expressed towards further deepening cooperation, including towards political and economic directions.

    Attention at the meeting was paid to the upcoming session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council. Future steps to be made towards concluding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by and between Georgia and Republic of Turkey were also discussed at the meeting.

    It was noted that joint efforts have acquired tremendous importance in addressing the challenges borne by the pandemic and hopes were expressed that close cooperation between Georgia and Turkey will remain high in the agenda in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

    Irakli Garibashvili expressed his gratitude to the Turkish side for the solid support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia. The Head of Government of Georgia highlighted the significant contribution of the Madam Ambassador in developing the bilateral relations between the two countries.

  • The U.S. Deputy Secretary has reiterated unwavering support for Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders

    U.S. Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman spoke today with Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.  The relevant press release was published on the official website of the U.S. Department of State.
     
    The Deputy Secretary reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for Georgia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.  She noted the United States will continue to urge Russia to withdraw its forces to pre-war positions and comply with the 2008 ceasefire agreement. 

    Deputy Secretary Sherman and Foreign Minister Zalkaliani emphasized the need to uphold the right of sovereign nations to choose their own security arrangements and support Georgia and Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of continued Russian aggression, and discussed how to enhance peace and security in Europe.

    We take to heart the tragic events in Kazakhstan that have claimed dozens of lives, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated during today's Cabinet meeting.

    The Head of Government also spoke about Georgian citizens in Kazakhstan, with some of them already having returned home, and the embassy maintaining active communication with those remaining on the ground, assisting them as-needed basis; they will return home in next few days.

    "Allow me to comment on the situation in Kazakhstan. We are keeping a close eye on the events of the past few days. We take to heart the tragic events in Kazakhstan. We hope that all steps will be taken as fast as possible to deescalate the situation, ensure safety and stability. We want Kazakhstan to leave this crisis behind soon in order to continue its path toward development. As for Georgian citizens in Kazakhstan, the Georgian embassy is maintaining contact with them as much as possible to assist them on the ground. As a result of the Government's active work, some have already returned. The embassy maintains active communication with those remaining on the ground, assisting them as-needed basis; they will return to Georgia in next few days," the Prime Minister said.
