Imported Social Natural Gas Price Has Been Optimised with an Agreement Signed After a Meeting of Giorgi Gakharia and Rovnag Abdullayev

Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia met Rovnag Abdullayev, President of SOCAR State Oil Company of Azerbaijan today.

Focus of the meeting was made at the kind neighbourly relations and partnership of Georgia and Azerbaijan in various areas. Special attention was paid to the investment projects implemented by SOCAR in Georgia and prospects of deepening cooperation in future.

It was noted that cooperation of Georgia with SOCAR is truly successful in the area of natural gas, which is once again evidenced by the optimisation of the social gas price in the country.

Namely, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia has been instructed by the Government of Georgia to negotiate with SOCAR a deal to import 200 million cubic meters of the so-called social gas with a reduced tariff from Azerbaijan to Georgia. Amendments were made to the existing agreement on social gas supply originally signed in 2016. Signing ceremony held today engaged Natia Turnava, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia; Giorgi Bakhtadze, CEO of Oil and Gas Corporation and Rovnag Abdullayev, President of SOCAR after a meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia.

As a result of the referred agreement. Government of Georgia will be able to maintain the stability of natural gas price for citizens of Georgia.

It was underlined that after the completion of the fourth stage of the South Gas Corridor, which envisages the transportation of Shah Deniz gas to the European market, will channel higher volumes of Azerbaijani gas through Georgia. At the same time, the country will be able to purchase more concessional Azerbaijani gas to meet its domestic demand.

Meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia and signing ceremony was attended by Faig Guliyev, Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of Azerbaijan to Georgia; Mahir Mamedov, CEO of SOCAR Energy Georgia; Elshad Nasirov, President of SOCAR for Investments and Marketing; Vagif Aliyev, Director of Investments at SOCAR.

Irakli Garibashvili underlined that, over the years, Georgia has achieved significant progress on the path to Euro-Atlantic integration.

    The conversation touched on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the complex security environment in the region and the world. Irakli Garibashvili and Javier Colomina discussed the situation in Georgia’s occupied territories. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Georgian Government’s commitment to the policy of peaceful conflict resolution. 

    The meeting at the Government Administration was attended by the Head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia, Alexander Vinnikov, Georgia’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, and the Head of the Georgian Mission to NATO, Victor Dolidze.

    A meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia with the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Jordan was held within the framework of the UN General Assembly.
    Ilia Darchiashvili and Ayman Safadi highly appreciated the friendly ties established between Georgia and Jordan and once again noted the importance of the historic visit of the Prime Minister of Georgia to the Kingdom of Jordan and the meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah II.
    The Ministers expressed their readiness to work actively for maintaining and further developing the existing relations. They emphasized the need to intensify tourism and people-to-people contacts between Jordan and Georgia.  According to them, this process will be given an additional impetus by the decision of Jordan's royal family to formally present a plot of land near Jordan River to Georgia.
    Focusing on the relations between the two countries in international formats, the sides once again emphasized Georgia's successful cooperation with the Arab League organization and the Arab states, in general.

    Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken hosted Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov for the first direct talks since recent fighting. Secretary Blinken conveyed condolences for the lives lost and emphasized the need to prevent further hostilities, underscoring the importance of returning to the peace process. They discussed next steps, and the Secretary encouraged the sides to meet again before the end of the month.

  • A REGULAR MEETING OF THE JOINT WORKING GROUP ON THE DELIMITATION OF THE BOTTOM OF THE CASPIAN SEA BETWEEN TURKMENISTAN AND THE REPUBLIC OF AZERBAIJAN WAS HELD

    On September 12-13, 2022, a regular meeting of the Joint Working Group on the delimitation of the bottom of the Caspian Sea between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan was held in Baku of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

    The delegation of Turkmenistan was headed by the Director of the Institute of the Caspian Sea, Special Representative of Turkmenistan for the Caspian Sea M.Atajanov, the Azerbaijani delegation - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Borders and the Caspian Sea Kh.Khalafov.

    The meeting was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departments of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

    During the meeting, the provisions of the draft Agreement between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan on the delimitation of the bottom of the Caspian Sea between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan were discussed.

    The parties agreed to continue the negotiation process on the delimitation of the bottom of the Caspian Sea.

  • EBRD President to visit Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia

    The President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Odile Renault-Basso, will tour the Caucasus next week, from 12 to 16 September, to meet senior government officials and business clients and partners. She will first visit Azerbaijan, then Georgia, before finishing in Armenia.

    This is her first in-person visit to the region since assuming office in late 2020.

    Prior to her departure, the EBRD President held virtual meetings with a diverse group of Azerbaijani, Georgian and Armenian civil society representatives.

    In Baku, in addition to important meetings, the EBRD President will sign the agreement for the Bank’s second Green City project in Azerbaijan and launch a joint project with AzPromo, the national investment promotion agency, aimed at stimulating the telecommunications, media and technology sector in the country.

    In Tbilisi, Odile Renault-Basso will hold different meetings and sign loan agreements with long-standing partners in the financial and healthcare sectors.

    The EBRD President will conclude her trip in Yerevan, where she will meet Armenia’s political leadership and the EBRD’s partners. Renaud-Basso will also visit the Centre for Creative Technologies (TUMO), where she will meet leaders of Armenia’s hi-tech sector, and attend celebrations for the 15th anniversary of the EBRD-supported Investment Council of Armenia.

    I am very much looking forward to visiting the Caucasus, where the Bank has achieved some remarkable results during its 30 years of operation. Despite its size, the region remains an important investment destination for us, one where we have already invested more than €10 billion,” said Renaud-Basso prior to her visit.
