Healthy life style as a national idea

Widespread physical training and heath improving movement is rapidly developed in Turkmenistan every year. As it was mentioned at the extended session of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to the outcomes of the first half of the year on July 3, large-scale work for stimulation and improvement of sport sphere, enhancement of its potential, formation of relative multifunctional infrastructure is carried out at full pace in the country.

Excellent sport complexes provided with modern equipment, stadiums, specialized sport schools, hundreds of other facilities have been built in all regions of the country in the last several years.

National legislation is permanently improved under the government support of physical training, health improving movement and sports of highest achievements; number of programmes have been adopted, which are currently under implementation. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has been established in 2018.

Comprehensive strengthening of health by engagement in various sports has become a national idea, strong consolidating factor uniting people of all ages and professions.

Involvement of all layers of population in this process plays huge role in assertion of values and principles of the Olympic movement, development of sports of highest achievements. Big popularization and educational work is carried out among children, who are actively engaged in regular sport disciplines from early age, is carried out for finding of talented sportsmen.

Younger generation masters successfully and with big enthusiasm both summer as well as winter sports such as ice-hockey and figure skating, which despite climate conditions of Central Asian Region, received rapid development.

Today, almost all educational facilities of the country have sport grounds and gyms provided with all necessary equipment. Residential complexes, which territories have children playgrounds, football, tennis and other fields, provide opportunities for going in for sports.

At the same time, technical sports, including motor sports, are actively developed. Due to support of the Head of the State, the Motor Sport Centre and race track have been opened in Ashgabat.

Equestrian sports is invariable very popular among Turkmenistan citizens. Both Turkmen and international equestrian sports, in particular show jumping, which was included in the programme of successful V Asian Indoor and Equestrian Games in Ashgabat in 2017, are successfully developed in the country. Modern equestrian complexes have been built and work in the capital and regions.

Training of professional sportsmen is carried out, important projects of construction of modern multifunctional stadiums, which meet modern requirements, special education facilities, race tracks and other important facilities, are implemented in Turkmenistan today.

Major activity in this direction supports to further growing of authority of the country, which makes deserved contribution of international sport movement that unites people around high humane ideals. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlights that sport is an important factor of strengthening of global peace, friendship and fruitful cooperation between the state and nations.

The policy in this sphere gives actual results – national sport is entering new levels and Turkmenistan becomes a place of big international competitions more often.

This is visually indicated by the triumph of V Asian Indoor and Martial Art Games. 2017 Asian Games were mega project in the history of sovereign Motherland. Having hosted these prestige competitions, our country proved its status of sport power, which is able to host major competitions.

Successful 2018 International Amul – Hazar Rally, which route run along historical Great Silk Road, and the World Weightlifting Championship supported to the growth of sport authority of Turkmenistan.

Therefore, being a full member of International Olympic Movement and Olympic Council of Asia, our country supports to expansion and popularization of the Olympic movement.

Adoption of Special Resolution on annual observation of the World Bicycle Day on June 3 by the UN General Assembly was a bright evidence of high appraisal and recognition of success of Turkmenistan in development of sports, promotion of values of the Olympic, physical and health improvement movement.

This historical document contains an urge to all countries to pay special attention to bicycle subject in the development strategies and to include it to international regional and local programmes.

It is worth to remind that the largest cycling awareness lesson, which was registered as the World record, has been held by initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Turkmen capital in 2018 on occasion of this world holiday.

The longest single line bicycle parade with participation of 2019 cyclist, which was also registered as the World record, has been held in Ashgabat Olympic village last year.

By this, the Head of the State has started a good tradition of mass cycling races, which unite not only citizens of Turkmenistan but also numerous foreign diplomats and businessmen working in our country.

In addition to 12-km cycling race, this year was marked with the opening the Bicycle Monument, which became a new attraction of Ashgabat. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted at the opening ceremony of the monument that this artistic composition embodies high spiritual rise of our people, its commitment to human values and international sport movement, rapid advancement of the country toward progress and prosperity.

Construction of excellent indoor racing track in the Olympic village, which meet international standards, has become an important milestone of development of cycling in Turkmenistan. According to foreign experts and specialists of International Cycling Union, it complies with all relevant requirements and provides required equipment and facility base, which make conditions for organization of high-level tournaments.

In 201, Turkmen capital is preparing to host the World Track Cycling Championship. Modern road infrastructure of our country matches excellently to organization of road race competitions.

Roads running along Kopetdag Mountains, which have hosted numerous national cycling competitions throughout many years, serves as a training infrastructure for leading sportsmen.

This is supported not only by favourable climate, which allows cycling outdoor almost all year around but also by excellent quality of roads.

Having announced strengthening of principles of health and active life style in the society, the Head of the State gives personal example to Turkmenistan citizens going for various sports like horse riding, cycling, motor sport, running, tennis, etc.

Every year, Turkmen sportsmen perform more actively in the world sport arena where they win different prizes including gold medals. This success is directly supported by equipment and facility base of sport industry and established favourable conditions for training.

Active work has been carried out from the beginning of the year for training of national team to XXXII Summer Olympic Games. Training of sportsmen in 7 disciplines including weightlifting, boxing, judo, Greco – Roman and free-style wrestling, karate, swimming and field and track-and-field athletics have been held in the Olympic village of the capital.

Therefore, taking active measures aimed at development and popularization of healthy life style, physical training and sports, Turkmenistan strengthen its status of the sport country.

  • Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan with the Leader of the National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan

    On February 22, 2021, the meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the Leader of the National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum who arrived in Ashkhabad on a working visit.

    During the constructive talks the sides exchanged views on the agenda of the effective Turkmen-afghan interaction. It was underlined the active development of bilateral ties with the aim of all-round implementation of the agreements reached on high level between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

    The Leader of the NIMP of Afghanistan especially underlined the efforts of Turkmenistan’s Leadership aimed at strengthening peace and security in the neighbor fraternal country as well as the integration of Afghanistan and its people into the stable channel of economic development.

    In this context the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan directed to the intensification and development of effective regional interaction with active involvement of the afghan side were highly appreciated.

    The parties expressed adherence to the addition of joint efforts in rapid implementation of energy, communications, transport and other projects. In this regard it was expressed mutual interest to the timely and effective realization of the perspective project of TAPI gas pipeline, of the TAP transmission line and new routes of the railroad from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan.

    During the negotiations the sides highlighted the significance of the realization by Turkmenistan of large-scale infrastructure projects directed to the further development of Afghanistan and the whole region. As is known, the given projects are aimed at creation of cost-effective jobs as well as stimulating the growth of well-being of the population living along the implementation of megaprojects.

    The Turkmen side confirmed once again its readiness to continue active dialogue aimed at advancement of peace inter-afghan negotiations, as well as to provide its political space for any of their future rounds.  

    In the course of the talks the patties agreed that it is necessary to strengthen and enhance the mechanisms of achieving peace, sustainable development, stability and security in the region as a whole.

  • The meeting with the delegation of Political Office of Taliban movement was held in the MFA of Turkmenistan

    February 6, 2021 the leadership of Turkmen foreign ministry met with the delegation of Political Office of Taliban movement headed by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in the MFA of Turkmenistan.

    During constructive negotiations, the parties have underlined the importance of establishing and maintaining peace and stability in Afghanistan.

    In this regard, it has been noted that Turkmenistan has given significant support for Afghan people, contributed to the development of Afghan economy, primarily strategically important fields such as energy, transport, connectivity and communications.

    The significant projects in the aforementioned fields are “Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India” pipeline, high voltage electric power transmission line, fiber-optic connection along “Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan” route, as well as railways connecting Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

    The delegation of Political Office of Taliban movement expressed full support to the implementation of above-mentioned infrastructure projects aimed at ensuring well-being and prosperity for Afghan people.

    The representatives of Afghan delegation made a statement to the press and answered questions from journalists after the negotiations.

    «Dear Mass Media Representatives!

    First of all, let me welcome you today at the press conference and introduce myself. My name is Mohammad Suhail Shaheen, I am member of the Political Office and Negotiations Team of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

    On behalf of the IEA Political Office, I would like to express my gratitude to the Turkmen side for the invitation to visit Turkmenistan and for warm hospitality.

    Yesterday, as part of our visit, we visited two mosques and acquainted with the ancient religious sites and cultural traditions of the Turkmen people.

    Today, here, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, we held talks in an open and friendly atmosphere with His Excellency Rashid Meredov, Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan and Deuty Prime Minister and his delegation, during which we gave a positive assessment of the policy of neutral Turkmenistan towards Afghanistan and the long-term political and economic support to Afghanistan that neighboring Turkmenistan is providing, provided and will provide.

    Turkmenistan, as a Muslim, neighboring, neutral state, has been taking initiatives for a number of years aimed at establishing peace and development in Afghanistan.

    The implementation of infrastructure projects in Afghanistan initiated by Turkmenistan deserves special attention and assessment. There is no doubt that the early start of construction of projects such as TAPI, TAP and railways from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan will contribute to the achievement of prosperity and economic development in Afghanistan. On the one hand, while we are struggling to gain independence of our country, meanwhile, we are trying to contribute to prosperity of our people and development of our country by providing protection to all national projects in the country.

    In this regard, as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, we declare our full support for the implementation and security of TAPI and other developmental projects in our country.

  • The issues of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN on the national and regional levels discussed

    Today, on the 2nd of February 2021, a meeting took place in the MFA of Turkmenistan between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the heads and representatives of the UN and its agencies in the country and in the region.  The session was held in the hybrid format that is some participants were present in the conference room, while other participants took part in the meeting through videoconferencing.    

    In particular, around 30 country and regional heads and representatives of the UN, including the Office of Resident Coordinator, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNFPA, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),  UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), International Organization for Migration (IOM), International Labour Organization (ILO) and others took part in the session. The representatives of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia also participated to the session.

    At the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan thanked the representatives of the international organization for constructive cooperation and personal input into the expansion of partnership with Turkmenistan.  He emphasized that cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations is a strategic vector of the external policy of the country.  “Today our collaboration encompasses practically all the main spheres – from provision of security to the issues of gender equality, from ecology matters to the protection of refugees’ rights” said the Minister.     

    During the session, a constructive exchange of views took place regarding the effective implementation of plans and projects determined for current year.  The participants highlighted the importance of the joint documents signed between Turkmenistan and international organizations in December of last year.  These are 44 documents with the total sum exceeding 82 million US dollars, in which case the co-financing on the part of Turkmenistan constitutes the largest proportion.  Among the main courses of collaboration are education, healthcare and social services, food security and ecology.     

    Also, the issues pertaining to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between the Government of Turkmenistan and the United Nations for 2021-2025 were discussed.

    The participants of the meeting heard the speeches of the representatives of above said agencies that reflected the results of joint work, as well as the current and prospective plans and projects.  The representatives of the international organizations, including the UN Country team highly appraised the activities of Turkmenistan on implementing the joint agreements.    

    During the meeting, the importance of the International Year of Peace and Trust that was recently launched by a special event in Ashgabat was also highlighted.  In this regard, the events embedded in the Roadmap of holding the year should undoubtedly contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals within the Agenda 2030. 

  • OPENING EVENT TO LAUNCH THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PEACE AND TRUST WAS HELD IN ASHGABAT

    On the 29th of January, 2021, the Opening event to launch the International Year of Peace and Trust was held in the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

    The heads and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, deputies of the Mejlis (Parliament), chiefs of diplomatic missions and representative offices of international organizations in Turkmenistan, Rectors of the institutions of higher education of the country, Editors-in-chief of press and representatives of national mass media, as well as foreign journalists accredited in Turkmenistan took part in the event.

    The heads and representatives of the United Nations and its structural agencies, Economic Cooperation Organization, Commonwealth of Independent States, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, as well as other regional and international organizations, and foreign mass media participated to the event via videoconferencing.

    During her opening remarks, the Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Christine Weigand noted the importance of the International Year of Peace and Trust initiated by the President of Turkmenistan for the sake of sustaining peace, stability and mutual understanding between people which is the key to sustainable development.

    In continuation of the topic, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov underlined that the unanimous adoption at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly of the Resolution declaring the year 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust has become a reflection of the efforts of the permanently neutral Turkmenistan calling for strengthening of the culture of peace and trust in the international relations. “Putting forward this idea, the Leader of Turkmen nation has specifically stated that it has a concrete nature and thus urged the international community to reinforce the adopted document with practical content, enrich it with real actions,” said R.Meredov. The head of the MFA of Turkmenistan underlined the significance of applying the means of diplomacy, the political dialog based on mutual understanding and cooperation in the advancement of friendly ties between countries and people and to achieve this Turkmenistan actively cooperates with the international partners.

    Speaking at the opening ceremony Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Central Asia, Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Natalya Gherman underlined the importance of the International Year of Peace and Trust, which meant greater cohesion for the sake of peace and prosperity of the world community.

    The timeliness of the International Year of Peace and Trust was also highlighted in the speech of the President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkir. Thanking the Government of Turkmenistan for initiating the International Year of Peace and Trust, he underlined that in view of the global situation, the need in peace and trust is high as never before. Mr. Bozkir urged the international community to continue cooperating through political dialog and solidarity on the way to peace, security and sustainable development.

    His words were complemented by the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Aksoltan Atayeva who noted the efficiency of peaceful initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan that help to attain the Sustainable Development Goals.

    The Minister of Foreign affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov highlighted in his speech the specific need in conducting International year of peace and trust which calls upon to activate efforts and activity on advocating the culture of peace.

    In her speech the Head of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat Natalya Drozd spoke about the importance of strengthening the culture of peace and trust.

    The Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization Hadi Soleimanpour also gave a speech at the event. He highly appraised the level of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the ECO, as well as emphasized that the economic progress is inseparably linked to the security in the region and in the world, and to attain this it is necessary to strengthen trust between countries and people.

    About the importance of strengthening peace and trust between countries and people has also spoke the Chairman of the Executive Committee - Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States Sergey Lebedev. He highlighted the effective role of Turkmenistan in the development of friendly ties not only in the region, but also in the whole world.

    The Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament Tatiana Valovaya and the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Lassina Zerbo highly appraised the role of Turkmenistan in the development of friendly and constructive ties between countries.

    In turn, the President of the General Conference of UNESCO Altay Cengizer and Assistant Director-General for the Africa Department of UNESCO Firmin Edouard Matoko emphasized the timeliness of holding the International Year of Peace and Trust. They noted that the notion of peace and trust are the keystones of international cooperation.

    Furthermore, the UNODC representative, Ppermanent representatives of Afghanistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Indonesia and Bangladesh at the UN have underlined the importance of conducting International year of peace and trust in the context of fully strengthening solidarity and mutual support on regional and global levels to create cohesion for addressing pressing issues of present.

    During the event, the participants discussed the possibilities of holding joint events in the framework of the International Year of Peace and Trust. A constructive exchange of views and proposals on the improvement of activities on the platform of regional and international organizations for the sake of peace, stability and sustainable development took place. Thus, upon the outcomes of the event, the Roadmap of the International Year of Peace and Trust was adopted.

  • Визит Министра иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики в Туркменистан

    20 января 2021 года начался двухдневный визит представительной азербайджанской делегации во главе с Министром иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики Джейхуном Азиз оглу Байрамовым в Туркменистан.

    На следующий день глава МИД Азербайджана был принят Президентом Туркменистана Гурбангулы Бердымухамедовым.

    Затем в здании МИД Туркменистана состоялась встреча Министра иностранных дел Туркменистана Рашида Мередова с Министром иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики Джейхуном Азиз оглу Байрамовым. Дипломаты с удовлетворением констатировали высокий уровень двусторонних связей в политической, торгово-экономической и культурно-гуманитарной областях.

    Было особо отмечено, что данный визит главы МИД Азербайджана в Ашхабад сопряжен с началом нового этапа энергетического сотрудничества между Туркменистаном и Азербайджаном. В этом контексте выделена значимость совместных шагов по ресурсоиспользованию и взаимодействию на Каспии.   

    Дипломаты выделили эффективность политико-дипломатического диалога между двумя странами. Они обсудили двустороннюю тематику, а также ключевые аспекты региональной и международной повесток дня. В этом контексте подчёркнута значимость сотрудничества Туркменистана и Азербайджана в рамках региональных и международных форматов.

    В ходе встречи также обсуждались возможности расширения экономического и инвестиционного сотрудничества, в том числе с задействованием транспортно-транзитного потенциала двух стран, обладающих современной автомобильной, железнодорожной и морской инфраструктурой.

    Особо отмечена значимость Соглашения о транзите и транспортном сотрудничестве (Lapis Lazuli) между Туркменистаном, Азербайджанской Республикой, Грузией, Турецкой Республикой и Исламской Республикой Афганистан.  Как известно стороны намерены способствовать укреплению потенциала Лазуритового коридора в рамках созданного трёхстороннего межправительственного формата взаимодействия в области транспорта и связи.    

    Обсуждены вопросы расширения культурно-гуманитарных связей.    Отмечено, что народы Туркменистана и Азербайджана связывают прочные исторические, культурные и духовные ценности.  Обсуждены возможности проведения совместных мероприятий в рамках текущего года, провозглашенного Международным годом мира и доверия согласно резолюции Генассамблеи ООН, инициированной Туркменистаном.
