“The annexation policy of Armenia is a dangerous trend for the whole world”
“Illegal “elections” in the unrecognized “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” and the so-called “inauguration ceremony” in the occupied Azerbaijani town of Shusha has no legal effect. This is nothing more than a confirmation of the fact of the occupation of the Azerbaijani lands by Armenia and a provocation aimed at violating peaceful negotiations.”
A statement was made by a journalist from the Republic of Azerbaijan, chairman of the “Reformist Youth” public union Farid Shahbazli, in which he spoke about illegal “elections” and the so-called “inauguration” ceremony in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. He noted that separatist tendencies in Armenia are becoming an increasing threat to the whole world:
“The results of the so-called “elections”, which contradict the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the norms and principles of international law, have no legal effect. Moreover, holding any “elections” or organizing a so-called “inauguration” ceremony in the territory of the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh indicates that the Armenian government, ignoring UN resolutions No. 822, 853, 874, 884 (on evacuation of the Armenian armed forces) and the requirements of international law, is not interested in a peaceful resolution to the conflict. This fact is not only a provocation against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, but also a threat to peace and stability in the region. Besides, this is another attempt to deceive the world community and legitimize the fact of occupation by Armenia. Therefore, countries of the world and international organizations should exert more serious pressure and apply tougher sanctions against Armenia and teach it to respect international law.
Further, the Azerbaijani journalist noted that today more than a million Azerbaijanis from Nagorno-Karabakh and 7 adjacent districts of Azerbaijan are in a condition of refugees and internally displaced persons. Including suffrage, all their rights and freedoms were grossly violated. Moreover, as a result of the ethnic cleansing policy of Armenia, more than 20.000 innocent people, including children, women and the elderly people, were brutally murdered and thousands were taken hostage and tortured. In this situation, the “elections” and the so-called “inauguration” are out of the question.
Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and family test positive for COVID-19
Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this morning that he and his family tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday. They are self-isolating in the Prime Minister’s residence.
The PM said that they were not showing any symptoms and that he would continue to work from self-isolation.
Pashinyan said he was tested for the virus because he was planning a visit to ‘the frontlines’.
He stated that he believed he was infected during a government consultation for coronavirus prevention work during which glasses for water were set on the table by a staff member who was not wearing gloves and who has since tested positive for the virus.
Azerbaijan celebrates Republic Day: Relying on the roots and confidently looking to the future
Republic Day is a significant date in the life of Azerbaijan. On May 28, 1918, the Declaration of Independence of Azerbaijan was proclaimed in the historical Viceroy’s Palace in that time Tiflis. Thus, the centuries-old tradition of statehood of the Azerbaijani people was revived in a new form of secular democratic republic. Becoming the first republic in the Muslim East, Azerbaijan affirmed the equal rights of all its citizens, regardless of gender, religious, ethnic or social affiliation. In the country, earlier than among many leading European nations, women's suffrage was guaranteed. All ethnic groups were represented in the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR).
Noteworthy is such an important circumstance as – ADR closely coordinated its efforts in the foreign policy arena with the Georgian Democratic Republic. So, in 1919, our countries concluded a defensive pact against the common threat posed by Denikin’s troops. The independence of both states was de facto recognized by the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers under a decision of January 11, 1920. It is truly symbolic that the sketch of the ADR coat of arms, taken as the basis of the current coat of arms of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was proposed by Prince Alexander Shervashidze, who was then in Baku.
Alas, that time global political situation did not allow Azerbaijan to maintain its independence. In April 1920, Baku was occupied by the Red Army. And less than a year later, the Georgian Democratic Republic fell under the blows of the Bolsheviks. All this once again demonstrated that the destinies of our countries are intertwined with history. The successes of one lead to the good of the other. And vice versa, the trouble of one is reflected in the next.
Being a part of the USSR, Azerbaijan also strove to develop friendly contacts with Georgia; outstanding representatives of the intelligentsia of both countries were connected by warm and close relations. Our peoples continued to crave for each other. The crown of this cooperation was the friendship between the leaders of the republics – Heydar Aliyev and Eduard Shevardnadze, whose activities laid the foundations for the restoration of the countries’ independence.
Returning to the leadership in Azerbaijan after the collapse of the Soviet Union and taking the country away from the edge of the abyss in 1993, Heydar Aliyev began to systematically strengthen the foundations of statehood. He became a true architect of the today’s Republic of Azerbaijan, identifying key areas and a strategy for its development. It is no coincidence that the main export pipeline Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, the construction of which through the territory of Georgia became the triumph of Heydar Aliyev’s oil diplomacy, is inextricably linked with his name.
Relying on the strong foundation of modern effective statehood, the Republic of Azerbaijan, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, has developed successes in all areas: reducing poverty from almost 45% in 2003 to less than 5% by now, developing social infrastructure, technological modernization, stimulating the non-oil sector, ensuring dynamic stability within the country and strengthening its prestige in the international arena. In this connection, it’s enough to recall at least such momentous events as the election of Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from a group of Eastern European states for 2012-2013 and the country's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement, uniting 120 states, which began in 2019.
Azerbaijan is successfully building up cooperation in all significant vectors: from the European Union to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the Council of Europe, from NATO to UNESCO, etc. Of course, the strengthening of strategic partnership with neighboring countries occupies a special place in the system of priorities, and among them Georgia traditionally plays the role of our closest good neighbor, whose brotherhood has passed the test of the long history and the collisions of the present stage.
Our countries, like a hundred years ago, continue to coordinate their activities, invariably provide mutual support to each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Like a hundred years ago, we have similar problems, we feel common pain. One fifth of the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan is under occupation. A fifth of Georgia’s territory has also been occupied.
The people and the state of Azerbaijan are determined to restore international law and justice, to ensure the violated rights of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons who have been subjected to ethnic cleansing in their own country and forcibly expelled from their homes. Strengthening the Azerbaijani state’s power significantly increased the ability to assert its rights and eliminate the consequences of the illegal use of force against it. And everyone can be sure that the success of Azerbaijan in this direction will create conditions for improving the situation in the region as a whole.
Today, celebrating Republic Day, the Azerbaijani people rely on their own strengths and actively use the potential of international cooperation. We are convinced that only by developing a mutually beneficial partnership it’s possible to confidently continue forwarding on the path of progress and prosperity. In its turn, the progress and prosperity of Azerbaijan will always benefit its good neighbors and Georgia, of course, in the first instance.

Turkmenistan initiates strategy of joint efforts to overcome global crisis
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov participated in Online Summit-level meeting of Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in Response to COVID-19.
Consistently implementing the foreign policy course, based on the principles of positive neutrality, peacefulness and good neighborliness, Turkmenistan calls for the development of wide fruitful cooperation that meets the goals of well-being in the regional and global dimensions.
In order to implement its creative potential for the common good, our country also actively interacts with authoritative international organizations and structures, making a significant contribution to strengthening the constructive partnership in developing balanced solutions to address important tasks of our time.
Speaking at the Online Summit-level meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov thanked the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement for convening the meeting.
The President of Turkmenistan expressed belief that the Non-Aligned Movement, which includes 120 states united by the common responsibility for the fate of the planet, cannot stay out its decision. Therefore, the Online Summit-level meeting of Non-Aligned Movement provides an opportunity to exchange views and assessments of a difficult situation, and outline ways to overcome it.
In this context, the President of Turkmenistan focused on some aspects of this problem.
First, it is clear that effective pandemic response demands a coordinated global response.
In this regard, the President of Turkmenistan proposed to develop and adopt a programme document within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement that includes the basic principles of solidarity of member states in the fight against epidemics, as well as a complex of measures aimed at preventing and eliminating them.
Touching upon the second aspect, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated that the mutual assistance of states - organizational, moral, financial, material played a crucial role. In the provision of such assistance, any forms of its politicization, discrimination, and setting any counter conditions are unacceptable.
Thirdly, close interaction between professionals is of great importance in the fight against a pandemic and its consequences. It is necessary to fully use the mechanisms of scientific diplomacy. It includes a constant exchange of experience, knowledge and information on the methods of treatment and prevention of a disease, medical preparations and equipment, personal protective equipment. In this context, the President of Turkmenistan spoke about the advisability of creating a Council of medical scientists of non-aligned states.
Touching upon the fourth aspect, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that joint multilateral work should be carried out with the coordinating role of the United Nations and in close cooperation with the World Health Organization, which has accumulated unique experience in combating viral diseases.
Expressing Turkmenistan’s support to WHO work and sincerely thanking its leadership and staff for their dedicated and professional work, the President of Turkmenistan emphasized that our country would continue active cooperation with this important international structure and expressed the willingness to render all possible assistance to it.
According to the President of Turkmenistan, it is crucial to establish effective channels of partnership between the Non-Aligned Movement and WHO, primarily through the medical communities of our countries. Speaking about this, the Turkmen leader suggested the Governments of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement to develop the forms of such joint activities.
The President of Turkmenistan also emphasized the importance of efficient cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized structures.
Addressing the participants of the Online Summit-level meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that, along with the urgent measures and tasks, it was important to think about the future.
It is obvious that the agenda of the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly will be substantially adjusted for the pandemic and will be mostly oriented towards the post-crisis period, during which the entire world community will have to work on restoring economy, social sphere and resolving humanitarian issues.
Therefore, today, it is necessary to create platforms for bringing the global economy onto the path of sustainable growth and the key areas should be energy, industry, transport, and trade.
“The global energy market has never encountered such difficulties as the current ones. Under these conditions, the establishment of energy supplies to world markets on fair and transparent principles, equality, recognition and consideration of the interests of states is of particular importance”, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The most important aspect of achieving this goal is the diversification of energy flows.
The President of Turkmenistan emphasized the significance to rapidly and fully restore transport links between countries and regions, transit corridors, as well as the search for new routes. This work will lead to the creation of a new infrastructure and, as a result, to the solution of many social problems, creation of new jobs.
According to the President of Turkmenistan, our states are called upon to play an important role in this area, contributing to the positive development of geo-economic processes in the world.
“We also have to join efforts to address large-scale humanitarian issues caused by the consequences of the pandemic”, the President of Turkmenistan emphasized. Assistance to migrants, refugees, vulnerable populations, especially in developing countries, should remain a priority on the agenda of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Specifying safeguarding of everlasting peace and security as the main, decisive condition for achieving all the goals set and overcoming the current crisis, the Turkmen leader stated that it was impossible to talk about the successful fight against the pandemic, overcoming its consequences against the background of wars and conflicts. “Therefore, we, the states of the Non-Aligned Movement, must resolutely declare our firm commitment to the peaceful resolution of all international disputes and contradictions”, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized.
As is well known, UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution initiated by Turkmenistan, declaring the year 2021 as “The International Year of Peace and Trust” in September last year. In this regard, the Turkmen leader addressed the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement with an appeal to actively contribute to the achievement of the goals set out in the Resolution, to contribute to the peaceful, constructive development of processes on the planet.
In conclusion, the President of Turkmenistan expressed support for the proposed draft Declaration, wishing all the participants of the meeting good health and success, and peace and prosperity to the peoples of the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement expressed gratitude to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the initiatives put forward to coordinate global efforts to overcome the coronavirus pandemic and ensure constructiveness in developing cooperation.
