Visit of the Governor of Saint-Petersburg to Ashgabat

On February 12, 2020, a representative delegation of the Russian Federation headed by the Governor of Saint-Petersburg A.D.Beglov has arrived to Ashgabat.

In the first half of the day on February 13, the guest was received by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues of political, economic and cultural-humanitarian scope. It was noted that the collaboration of Turkmenistan with the regions of the Russian Federation holds a vital place in bilateral cooperation.  

Then, the meeting of A.D.Beglov with the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R.Meredov was held. The parties noted that the mutual visits of the Leaders of two states serve as an important link in the development of Turkmen-Russian relations. The positive cooperation experience in the framework of international and regional organizations was voiced. In this context, the initiatives of the Government of Turkmenistan aimed at the maintenance of peace, stability and economic growth in the region, as well as beyond it were specifically underlined. 

The parties spoke about the high level of trade-economic ties, including the constructive participation of the Russian companies in the number of projects on the territory of Turkmenistan. The present and prospective projects in the oil and gas, as well as in the transport spheres were considered.    

Also, the cooperation in the area of education, science, culture, art and sport was discussed. The subject of establishing cooperation between the institutes of higher education of Turkmenistan and Russia through the formation of pertinent normative base with the aim of exchanging expertise in various spheres, particularly in the area of high technologies was discussed.  

Speaking about the rich culture of the two countries, the parties underlined the success of cultural events organized in Turkmenistan and Saint-Petersburg and expressed hope for further cooperation in this course. 

In the end of the meeting, the parties reiterated the adherence of two countries to further strengthening of bilateral ties and signed a Protocol on the outcomes of the talks between the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R.Meredov and Governor of Saint-Petersburg A.D.Beglov.

The ministers underlined the need to maintain a positive tendencies and to act carefully for the protection of public health.

    “Georgia made considerable progress in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgia has the lowest infection rate in Europe, and I want to congratulate you on this success. Hungary too is successful in dealing with the pandemic. To maintain this achievement, both countries need to take careful steps as human health is first and foremost. Today we discussed the possibilities of opening borders. We quite understand Georgia’s motive for extending travel restrictions. As successful countries in the fight against the pandemic, we both take careful steps. Many Hungarians keen to arrive in Georgia. We agreed to create a working group to regularly exchange relevant information” - Peter Szijjarto said.
    The Ministers highlighted that Hungary openly and unequivocally supports Georgia at both bilateral and international forums.


    “Hungary is the firm supporter of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration. I can recall no such high-level conference or meeting where the Hungarian Foreign Minister has not expressed his clear support for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Quite recently, at the NATO and EaP ministerial meetings, he again made very clear messages in support for Georgia” – David Zalkaliani said.

    During their meeting the Ministers discussed the situation in Georgia’s occupied territories. David Zalkaliani brought to his colleague’s attention the difficult humanitarian situation on the ground.

    Special note was taken of the successful education cooperation between the two countries. Today, as part of the Hungarian Minister’s visit to Georgia, Georgia and Hungary will sign a memorandum and an additional protocol on cooperation in the areas of culture and education, including in terms of granting scholarships to Georgian students.


    The Ministers also spoke about the Hungarian airlines Wizz Air operating flights from the Kutaisi airport to Europe. According to the Hungarian Minister, Wizz Air successfully cooperates with Georgia and once the airline is fully up and running again, Georgia will be its priority destination. “An increasing number of Hungarians want to visit Georgia. Up to 7000 Hungarians arrived in Georgia over the past year. Due to the pandemic, however, Vizz Air reduced its flights not only to Georgia, but also to many other countries. Your government has always been supporting Vizz Air activities in Georgia. I am sure Vizz Air will reestablish its position in the world soon” - Peter Szijjarto noted.

    David Zalkaliani added that Vizz Air is one of the important Hungarian companies in Georgia. “It plays an important role in advancing Georgia’s close ties with Europe” – he said.

    During his visit Szijjarto will hold meetings with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, as well as the ministers of foreign affairs, economy, regional developments and education, as well as Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia.

  • TURKMENISTAN ON THE WAY TO JOINING THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION AS AN OBSERVER

    On May 15, 2020, a regular meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan was held in Ashgabat. During the session, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a Resolution “On the entry of Turkmenistan to the World Trade Organization as an observer.”

    In accordance with the Document, immediately today, the Turkmen side sent the application letter on the accession to the World Trade Organization as an observer to the Director-General of the WTO.  In line with the WTO procedures, the issue of accepting Turkmenistan to the WTO as an observer will be considered during the successive session of the WTO General Council to be held in the near future.

  • A briefing entitled “International cooperation of Turkmenistan in the healthcare sphere” was held in Ashgabat

    On May 8, 2020, a briefing entitled "International cooperation of Turkmenistan in the healthcare sphere" was held in the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

    The briefing was attended by the heads and representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health and Medical Industry, and other relevant departments of Turkmenistan, leading political scientists of the country, as well as heads of diplomatic missions and representatives of international organizations accredited in the country, local and accredited journalists of foreign media outlets.

    Also, the event was attended by video conferencing by leaders and representatives from the health sector of several foreign countries, in particular, the Deputy Minister of Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus, senior representatives of leading foreign medical universities, including Medical University of Azerbaijan, Belarusian State Medical University and Tbilisi State Medical University. Representatives of leading foreign media and public organizations also participated in the briefing through video conferencing. Thus, more than 60 representatives from 20 countries of the world took part in the briefing.

    During the speeches, it was noted that under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan stands for international cooperation in the name of protecting and maintaining people's health, which is especially relevant in the current period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Adhering to the recommendations of reputable international organizations, the country has achieved considerable success in promoting its health policy and calls on the international community to work together to overcome the consequences of the pandemic. This applies to humanitarian cooperation, the restoration of trade and economic ties, including ensuring the functioning of transport and transit systems in emergency conditions.

    As the meeting participants emphasized, as a result of a clear and well-coordinated policy of Turkmenistan, the country managed to prevent the spread of diseases caused by a new type of coronavirus COVID-19 on its territory.

    In their speeches, the Deputy Minister of Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus Ye.Bogdan, as well as the representatives of senior management of foreign universities, in particular, Vice-Rector for International Relations of the Belarusian State Medical University V.Rudenok, Vice-Rector of the Tbilisi State Medical University I. Kokhreidze and the Vice-Rector for International Affairs of the Medical University of Azerbaijan O. Isaev particularly noted that Turkmenistan had promptly responded to outbreak of a pandemic, emphasizes the prevention of infectious and non-communicable diseases. The country's leadership also attaches great importance to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

    During the briefing, a constructive exchange of views took place on the establishment of a global mechanism for resolving crisis situations. Participants also agreed that protecting the health of all people lies at the heart of the sustainable development process.

  • Turkmen-Afghan Business Forum held in Ashgabat

    On the 27th of February 2020, Turkmen-Afghan Business Forum was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

    From the Turkmen side, the heads and representatives of a number of ministries and agencies of the country, including the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry participated to the Forum. Among the participants of the representative delegation of Afghanistan, there were specialists of trade-economic sector of the country and private entrepreneurs.

    During the meeting, the parties touched upon a number of contemporary issues of trade and economic nature. The opportunities of expanding the variety of imports and exports between the two countries, enhancement of investments, facilitation of trade procedures, as well as the establishment of direct contacts between the business circles were regarded.   

    The parties expressed intent to intensify the trade relations in the field of energy, transport and logistics, communications and industry.  The exchange of views on expanding the cooperation in the oil and gas field, as well as in the construction sphere took place. The participants agreed to continue regular negotiations on these matters. 

    Speaking about the social-economic development of Afghanistan, the participants noted the vital role of humanitarian initiatives realized under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

    22-25 February, Georgia – The President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Anders Knape, will pay an official visit to the country. Accompanied by Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer, the President will meet in Tbilisi with the Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the Deputy Chairman of Parliament Kakhaber Kuchava, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Lasha Darsalia, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Maya Tskitishvili, and the Public Defender Nino Lomjaria. Meetings are also scheduled in Gori with the Mayor of the city and the Governor of Shida Kartli region, as well as with the Georgian Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and with the members of the Georgian delegation to the Congress.
