Georgian Dream names Giorgi Gakharia as candidate for post of Prime Minister

The ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party named Giorgi Gakharia, Minister of Internal Affairs as the candidate for the post of Prime Minister.

Bidzina Ivanishvili, Chairman of Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party made the statement after the sitting of the political council and parliamentary majority held at the party’s central office.

Giorgi Gakharia has held the posts of Minister of Internal Affairs and Vice Prime Minister since November 13, 2017. He also serves as Secretary of the National Security Council.

In 2016-2017, Gakharia was the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development. He also held the post of Business Ombudsman in the past.

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze quit the post on September 2. Bakhtadze said that he had completed his mission at this stage.

The renewed cabinet of ministers will require the expression of confidence on part of the Georgian Parliament.

Vakhtang Gomelauri is named as the candidate for post of Minister of Internal Affairs, while Irakli Gharibashvili – as a candidate for post of Defense Minister.

Giorgi Gakharia, the candidate for post of Prime Minister made the statement after the sitting of the political council and parliamentary majority held at Georgian Dream party’s central office.

Levan Izoria, current Defense Minister is presented for post of Secretary of the National Security Council.

Vakhtang Gomelauri currently serves as head of State Security Service. Irakli Gharibashvili is the Political Secretary of Georgian Dream’s Party.

    In a resolution adopted by the Assembly, the organization calls on the ruling party to provide the kind of electoral system before the 2020 elections that that can have the support and trust of all stakeholders.

    The Assembly urges the Georgian ruling majority to ensure the introduction of an election system that can have the support and trust of all stakeholders in time before the 2020 elections; to fully implement all the recommendations of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) formulated in the opinion on the selection and appointment of Supreme Court judges; to promptly implement the fourth wave of reform of the judiciary and for all political forces in the country to work to overcome the continuing polarisation in the political environment”, reads the resolution.

    The resolution adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe summarizes the results of monitoring in 10 countries: Georgia, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.

    Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia, Li Yan, together with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, was invited to attend the official opening ceremony of Gardabani II Thermal Power Plant, constructed by China Tianchen Engineering Corporation, and deliver a speech. Natia Turnava, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Yuan Xuemin, President of China Tianchen Engineering Corporation and others have also attended the opening ceremony.

    The Georgian side highly praised and expressed their gratitude towards Chinese constructors for their excellent quality projects completed at a record pace. Also, they pointed out, that Gardabani Thermal Power Plant is the largest cycle, energy-efficient power station in Georgia, which can meet 70% of average monthly electricity consumption in Tbilisi, improve the energy stability and security in Georgia. At the same time, it will create many job opportunities; contribute to the economic development of the country and peaceful life of its residents.

    After the opening ceremony, Ambassador Li Yan and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia visited the Power Plant and saw the equipment.

  • Prime Minister of Georgia Met President of Azerbaijan in Davos

    Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia met Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the scope of World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos today.

    Second meeting of Georgian and Azeri leaders within a short timespan evidences high-level dynamism of bilateral relations.

    Discussions at the meeting today were related to the strategic partnership of two countries, along with transport and energy projects of regional magnitude that are implemented jointly by Georgia and Azerbaijan. Topics of bilateral agenda were also reviewed.

    Prime Minister of Georgia and President of Azerbaijan agreed to continue with intensive communication in future.

  • Georgian Prime Minister and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Discuss Joint Regional Project

    As it was pointed out during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov, the Georgia-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Economic Commission will resume its meeting next year.

    The meeting emphasized the strategic partnership and good neighborly relations between the two countries, and commended the Prime Minister's recent official visit to Azerbaijan.

    Special emphasis during the meeting between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan was placed on the process of delimitation of the Georgia-Azerbaijan state border.

    The parties underlined that this process must be carried out in the context of the strategic partnership between the two countries, taking into account the interests of and friendship between the states.

    The conversation also revolved around enhancing the effectiveness and competitiveness of the energy corridor, and around the need of continuous joint efforts for tapping into both countries' transit potential.
    In this context, the parties praised the inauguration of the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), one of the key components of the Southern Gas Corridor.

    The meeting also underscored the dire humanitarian situation in Georgia's occupied territories. The Prime Minister spoke of Doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili's unlawful detention in the occupied territory, and emphasized the significance of joint efforts from friend nations in order to achieve his timely release. Giorgi Gakharia thanked the Republic of Azerbaijan for its strong support of Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

    Elmar Mammadyarov has arrived in Tbilisi to participate in the 8th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, held in the ongoing trilateral format between the countries.
