Georgia: Teachers from Pankisi visit Brussels

This week, a group of 20 teachers from Georgia visited the Belgian capital of Brussels. All the teachers came from public schools in Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge region.

They attended meetings in Brussels to learn about the local education system. The teachers also gained a better understanding of the European approach to education.

This was the first ever visit of Georgian public school teachers and principals from the Pankisi Gorge to Brussels.

  • Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to participate in Georgia-EU Association Council’s meeting in Brussels

    Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili will participate in the 6th meeting of the Georgia-EU Association Council, in Brussels. The Government delegation led by the Head of Government departed for Brussels today.

    The visit includes high-level meetings in the European Commission, the European Council and the Parliament, and NATO.

    Irakli Garibashvili will hold his first meeting today, with President of the European Council Charles Michel.

    On March 16, after the Georgia-EU Association Council's meeting, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhely will hold a joint press conference.

    On March 17, high-level meetings will be held in the European Parliament and NATO. The Head of Georgian Government will be hosted by the Alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, at NATO headquarters. After the meeting, Irakli Garibashvili and Jens Stoltenberg will hold a joint press conference. The NATO-Georgia Commission is also scheduled to convene.

    The Georgian delegation led by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili consists of Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, and Justice Minister Gocha Lortkipanidze.

  • Визит Министра иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики в Туркменистан

    20 января 2021 года начался двухдневный визит представительной азербайджанской делегации во главе с Министром иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики Джейхуном Азиз оглу Байрамовым в Туркменистан.

    На следующий день глава МИД Азербайджана был принят Президентом Туркменистана Гурбангулы Бердымухамедовым.

    Затем в здании МИД Туркменистана состоялась встреча Министра иностранных дел Туркменистана Рашида Мередова с Министром иностранных дел Азербайджанской Республики Джейхуном Азиз оглу Байрамовым. Дипломаты с удовлетворением констатировали высокий уровень двусторонних связей в политической, торгово-экономической и культурно-гуманитарной областях.

    Было особо отмечено, что данный визит главы МИД Азербайджана в Ашхабад сопряжен с началом нового этапа энергетического сотрудничества между Туркменистаном и Азербайджаном. В этом контексте выделена значимость совместных шагов по ресурсоиспользованию и взаимодействию на Каспии.   

    Дипломаты выделили эффективность политико-дипломатического диалога между двумя странами. Они обсудили двустороннюю тематику, а также ключевые аспекты региональной и международной повесток дня. В этом контексте подчёркнута значимость сотрудничества Туркменистана и Азербайджана в рамках региональных и международных форматов.

    В ходе встречи также обсуждались возможности расширения экономического и инвестиционного сотрудничества, в том числе с задействованием транспортно-транзитного потенциала двух стран, обладающих современной автомобильной, железнодорожной и морской инфраструктурой.

    Особо отмечена значимость Соглашения о транзите и транспортном сотрудничестве (Lapis Lazuli) между Туркменистаном, Азербайджанской Республикой, Грузией, Турецкой Республикой и Исламской Республикой Афганистан.  Как известно стороны намерены способствовать укреплению потенциала Лазуритового коридора в рамках созданного трёхстороннего межправительственного формата взаимодействия в области транспорта и связи.    

    Обсуждены вопросы расширения культурно-гуманитарных связей.    Отмечено, что народы Туркменистана и Азербайджана связывают прочные исторические, культурные и духовные ценности.  Обсуждены возможности проведения совместных мероприятий в рамках текущего года, провозглашенного Международным годом мира и доверия согласно резолюции Генассамблеи ООН, инициированной Туркменистаном.

  • Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan

    On the 20th of January 2021, a two-day visit to Turkmenistan of a representative Azerbaijani delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Aziz oglu Bayramov has started. 

    On the following day, the head of the MFA of Azerbaijan was received by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

    Then, the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Aziz oglu Bayramov was held in the premises of the MFA of Turkmenistan. The diplomats have stated with satisfaction the high level of bilateral ties in political, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian areas.  

    It was especially noted that the present visit of the head of MFA of Azerbaijan to Ashgabat complements the start of a new stage of energy cooperation between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. In this regard, the significance of joint steps on resource use and collaboration on the Caspian Sea was highlighted.       

    The diplomats highlighted the efficiency of political-diplomatic dialogue between the two countries. They discussed bilateral issues, as well as the aspects of regional and international agendas. In this regard, the importance of collaboration of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan in the framework of regional and international formats was underlined.      

    The possibilities of expanding economic and investment cooperation, including through the use of transport-transit potential of the two countries that possess modern automobile, railway and sea infrastructure were also discussed. 

    The importance of the Transit and Transport Cooperation Agreement between Turkmenistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Turkey and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (Lapis Lazuli) was also emphasized.  As known, the parties intend to facilitate unfolding of the Lapis Lazuli route capabilities in the framework of the trilateral intergovernmental format of collaboration in the area of transport and communication.       

    The issues of expanding cultural and humanitarian ties were discussed. It is noted that the people of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are united by firm historic, cultural and spiritual values. The opportunities of holding joint events within the current year that was declared as the International Year of Peace and Trust by the UN General Assembly upon the initiative of Turkmenistan were discussed.

    Within the framework of his visit to Brussels, the Georgian Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani, held a meeting with the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Policy, Olivér Várhelyi.

    The discussion touched upon cooperation within the format of the “Eastern Partnership Initiative”, including the framework of Ministerials for Foreign Ministers and meetings for the leaders of member states. Namely, the discussion took place regarding issues associated with the upcoming summit and future perspectives of the partnership beyond the year of 2020.

    The parties, once again, exchanged opinions regarding the priorities and views of the Georgian side.

    The Georgian party expressed gratitude towards the EU for the active support provided to Georgia during the COVID-19 pandemic. In turn, the EU Commissioner gave a positive assessment of the steps taken on behalf of the Georgian Government in terms of preventing the spread of the virus.

    The developments and general situation on the ground in the occupied territories was also discussed, condemning the illicit activity of the occupational forces, which only became more distinct during the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerns were expressed regarding the illicit detainment and arrest of the Georgian citizen on the 11th of July perpetrated by the occupational regime forces.

    The role of the EU was underscored in terms of finding a peaceful resolution of the conflict, outlining the significance of the EUMM (EU monitoring mission) as a preventive force in the occupied regions on the ground, deescalating the situation via the means of the monitoring process.
