O3b Satellites Now Ready to Provide More Fibre-like Connectivity

Luxembourg, 1 June 2018 – SES announced today that it is now ready to offer increased capacity across the globe through the expanded O3b Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) constellation.

 The constellation of Ka-band satellites orbits at approximately 8,000 km from Earth – four times closer to the planet than geostationary (GEO) satellites, delivering connectivity with low latency and fibre-like performance for data services virtually anywhere on the planet. The O3b fleet is the only non-geostationary (NGSO) system delivering fibre-like broadband services today.

 The expanded satellite constellation enables SES Networks to bring 38% more capacity, enhancing coverage and increasing performance to market, while continuing to drive digital equality to support digital transformation worldwide. The additional capacity will also cater to the growing consumption of bandwidth in the fixed data, mobility and government markets.

The four new O3b satellites were successfully launched by an Arianespace Soyuz rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana on 9 March 2018, bringing the total number of MEO satellites in the O3b fleet to 16. Four more O3b satellites are scheduled for launch in H1 2019.

 

The next generation of O3b satellites, O3b mPOWER, are scheduled for launch in 2021 and will bring massive scale and flexibility to the proven O3b model. The seven super-powered MEO satellites will have more than 30,000 dynamic, electronically-generated fully-shapeable and steerable beams that can be shifted and switched in real time. It will provide coverage to an area of nearly 400 million square kilometres and will be scalable to multiple terabits of throughput globally.

    XICHANG, July 19 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched a new remote-sensing satellite group from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 8:19 a.m. Monday (Beijing Time).

    The satellites were sent into orbit by a Long March-2C carrier rocket. This is the 10th group belonging to the Yaogan-30 family, and will survey the electromagnetic environment and verify relevant technologies by adopting multi-satellite network mode.

    Also aboard was Tianqi-15, a satellite belonging to the Tianqi constellation, which will serve the Internet of Things data collection.

    The Long March-2C carrier rocket, developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, measures 43 meters in length and has a takeoff mass of 242 tonnes.

    The rocket is capable of sending two tonnes of payloads to the solar synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km.

    Monday's launch was the 380th mission of the Long March rocket series that also marked the conclusion of the launch of the Yaogan-30 family.

    The Long March-2C has sent all 10 groups of Yaogan-30 satellites into orbit with high accuracy since September 2017, with a 100 percent launch success rate.

    Viewers in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro will be able to receive compelling content from SES’ orbital location at 23.5 degrees East

    Luxembourg, 15 November 2018 -- Viewers in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro will soon have access to new content delivered by Telekom Srbija from SES’ key orbital location at 23.5 degrees East. SES announced today that the main telecommunication operator in Serbia has signed a multi-year and multi-transponder contract for service on its Astra satellite to launch Telekom Srbija’s new Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform which will start broadcasting in all three countries simultaneously mid-December.

    The new DTH platform will enable Telekom Srbija to broadcast more than 150 channels, including up to 30 in High Definition (HD). All Serbian public television channels will also be available on the platform, bringing a complete selection of content to viewers in the market. Additional channels will be offered as Free-to-Air for viewers.  

    Viewers will also benefit from technology improvements in their home. Telekom Srbija has chosen cardless set-top boxes for this service, and for those that don’t have reception equipment already this platform will be accessible using a small 60cm dish.

    Telekom Srbija, a long-term partner of SES, began working with SES in 2011 and earlier this year moved their complete channel bouquet to SES satellites at SES’ 23.5 degrees East orbital location, ensuring the largest possible audience reach. SES serves nearly 2.9 million DTH homes in Europe from 23.5 degrees East.

    Satellite services and solutions provider Marlink has contracted SES Networks’ fibre-like connectivity to enable new low-latency services in its enterprise portfolio, SES announced today. With a highly differentiated range of satellite-based solutions, Marlink is expanding the options and value it offers to meet the evolving demands of its customers.

     The contract enables Marlink to leverage SES’ O3b medium earth orbit (MEO) constellation for big data applications that require fibre-like performance. With round-trip latencies below 150 milliseconds, the performance of MEO-enabled networks is equivalent to that of standard fibre connections, while also providing greater reach and faster deployment times. These high throughput services will complement Marlink’s existing portfolio of geostationary (GEO) services for utilities, renewable energy, oil and gas, civilian governments and other industries.

     “This new agreement contributes to the continuous expansion of capacity and diversity in Marlink’s hybrid network solutions and smart routing, with the low-latency link on the O3b fleet especially attractive as we develop certified and future-proof integrated services for our diverse enterprise customer base,” said Olivier Gommes, Director Technology & Innovation – Enterprise at Marlink.

  • Channel 4 Secures Continued DTH Coverage of the British Isles with SES

    Channel 4 extends satellite capacity agreement with SES for Direct-to-Home broadcast services in the UK and Ireland

    Luxembourg, 11 September 2018 -- British and Irish viewers will continue to enjoy reliable Channel 4 programmes on direct-to-home (DTH) platforms following a multi-year extension agreement at 28.2/28.5 degrees East with SES.

    Under the agreement, Channel 4 will renew capacity on SES’s ASTRA 2E and 2G satellites to transmit a full line-up of services for the British and Irish markets.

    DTH is a key technology ensuring high quality video for viewers in the British Isles, and the long-term renewal with SES of the transponders on the ASTRA fleet highlights the value both companies place on their relationship.

    “We have been relying on SES’s services for 20 years and are very pleased to extend our partnership,” said Keith Underwood, Chief Operating Officer of Channel 4. “This is an important element in our strategy to enable high quality, reliable broadcast entertainment for our viewers across the UK and Ireland.”

  • SES Government Solutions Joins FAA’s COMSTAC

    SES GS will represent the satellite communications industry on the Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC) to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration

    Reston, VA, 18 July 2018 – The U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao has appointed SES Government Solutions’ Senior Director of Business Development Paul E. Damphousse to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC), SES announced today. The COMSTAC provides executive-level observations, findings and recommendations to the FAA Administrator regarding critical issues within the commercial space industry. Damphousse will serve as a senior industry representative and member of COMSTAC on behalf of SES GS, wholly-owned subsidiary of SES, and will advise the government during bi-annual COMSTAC meetings and through participation on the COMSTAC working groups.

    SES GS’ current role in the satellite communications market is to provide satellite end-to-end services to U.S. Government customers. Should the U.S. Government pursue more non-traditional commercial space capabilities in lieu of government purpose-built satellites, COMSTAC can rely on SES GS to provide recommendations for new and innovative techniques that increase speed and affordability for government end-users.

    “Seismic shifts are occurring within the commercial space sector, including changes in how non-traditional space activities are regulated. Spacecraft servicing, space traffic management, and hosted payloads are a few of these activities and are of great interest to SES GS,” said Damphousse. “My goal is to ensure that the U.S. Government is fully informed from a commercial space perspective regarding new consensus standards and regulatory decisions.”

    Damphousse was chosen based on his long-standing relationship with the U.S. Department of Transportation, industry experience and leadership through high-level executive engagement. Prior to joining SES, Damphousse was CEO and Founder of General Astronautics, LLC. Damphousse retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in December 2011 after 22 years of service as a combat pilot and space operations officer. He will join eight newly appointed members, as well as 17 re-appointed members, as part of COMSTAC.
