OSCE Ministerial attended by Georgian Delegation

Within the framework of the Meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council, a traditional meeting of the GUAM Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, chaired by Azerbaijan, was held.
Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and GUAM Secretary General Altai Efendiev attended the meeting.
Discussions focused on the main issues relating to the co-operation in the frames of the organisation, including, political, sectoral and inter-parliamentary relations. Talking points also included co-operation with the organisation’s main partner states (the U.S., Japan) and other international and regional organisations in the GUAM+ format.  
At the meeting, Georgia assumed the chairmanship in GUAM for 2017. Mikheil Janelidze presented Georgia’s GUAM chairmanship programme “Together for stronger GUAM” to the Council and focused on the priorities of the chairmanship. In conclusion, the decisions relating to the organisational issues were signed and the protocol of the meeting was prepared.  
On 8 December, Hamburg also hosted a meeting in the GUAM-Japan format, which was attended by the GUAM Foreign Ministers and Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nobuo Kishi. Particular emphasis was put on the importance of elaboration and implementation of new initiatives and projects in the frames of the “GUAM-Japan Cooperation Programme” signed last year. The GUAM Foreign Ministers thanked the Japanese side for active support and partnership, for organisation of the annual seminars for the GUAM experts with a view of sharing experience in different spheres. In conclusion, the GUAM and Japan made a joint statement for press.

    On July 13, 2020, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov had a telephone conversation with Joseph Borel, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

    Minister Elmar Mammadyarov informed the EU official about the attempted attack of the Armenian armed forces on the state border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the prevention of this military provocation and the ongoing tense situation in the region. He noted that this act of aggression by Armenia seriously casts doubt on the essence of the negotiations on the settlement of the conflict and that Armenia and its aggressive policy are a major threat to peace and security in the region, including major geostrategic projects in the region.

    J.Borel noted that a spokesperson for the European External Action Service had issued a statement about the incident on the border between the two countries. He also expressed that the EU supports the urgent measures to prevent tensions in the region, as well as the mediation efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, and called for substantive talks to resolve the conflict.

  • Georgian Prime Minister and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Discuss Joint Regional Project

    As it was pointed out during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov, the Georgia-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Economic Commission will resume its meeting next year.

    The meeting emphasized the strategic partnership and good neighborly relations between the two countries, and commended the Prime Minister's recent official visit to Azerbaijan.

    Special emphasis during the meeting between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan was placed on the process of delimitation of the Georgia-Azerbaijan state border.

    The parties underlined that this process must be carried out in the context of the strategic partnership between the two countries, taking into account the interests of and friendship between the states.

    The conversation also revolved around enhancing the effectiveness and competitiveness of the energy corridor, and around the need of continuous joint efforts for tapping into both countries' transit potential.
    In this context, the parties praised the inauguration of the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), one of the key components of the Southern Gas Corridor.

    The meeting also underscored the dire humanitarian situation in Georgia's occupied territories. The Prime Minister spoke of Doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili's unlawful detention in the occupied territory, and emphasized the significance of joint efforts from friend nations in order to achieve his timely release. Giorgi Gakharia thanked the Republic of Azerbaijan for its strong support of Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

    Elmar Mammadyarov has arrived in Tbilisi to participate in the 8th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, held in the ongoing trilateral format between the countries.

    Georgian Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met with the newly-appointed  Head of the NATO Liaison OfficeRosaria Puglisi.
    The Minister congratulated Rosaria Puglisi on her appointment wishing her success in her future endeavours. Discussions focused on various aspects of Georgia-NATO co-operation, including the implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP) and the preparation for the NATO Summit in 2018.
    Special attention was paid to the important role the NATO Liaison Office plays in terms of facilitating Georgia’s integration with NATO, as well as promoting communication with the population.
    According to Rosaria Puglisi, the priority during her term of office will be assisting Georgia in moving closer to the Alliance. She reaffirmed NATO’s firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

    Within the framework of his visit to New York, the Georgian Vice Premier, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze attended the global business forum organized by Bloomberg.
    The high-level meeting was opened by Bloomberg Founder and President Michael Bloomberg, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, President of the French Republic  Emmanuel Macron and Alibaba Founder Jack Ma.
    Within the framework of the meeting, Mikheil Janelidze had the opportunity to exchange his views with the world leaders and the heads of the largest business companies, including the former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Bloomberg Founder Michael Bloomberg. Underlining the importance of business-government co-operation in overcoming the global challenges, the latter thanked the Georgian Vice Premier for his participation in the event.
    On the sidelines of the event, Mikheil Janelidze also met with the Chief Executive Officer of MasterCard Company, Ajay Banga, who expressed his interest in Georgia’s business environment and in identifying priority areas for co-operation with Georgia.
    EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and representatives of international companies took part in the thematic panels and spoke before the participants of the event.
