Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani held a working lunch with members of the British Parliament. The all-party parliamentary group on Georgia, headed by Georgia’s great supporter and friend Jonathan Djanogly, plays an important role in the process of presenting Georgia’s interests at the British Parliament. Discussions focused on the existing close and friendly relations between Georgia and the UK, on the issues of common interest and strategic co-operation.  
The members of the British parliament reaffirmed their support for Georgia’s territorial integrity, policy of non-recognition and the European aspirations and underlined that the international community positively assessed the elections held in Georgia.  
David Zalkaliani thanked the guests for visiting Georgia and Jonathan Djanogly personally for the particular amiability towards Georgia, and members of the all-party parliamentary group on Georgia – for Georgia’s active support.  
David Zalkaliani informed the guests on the reforms carried out in Georgia, on the investment and business potential, as well as on the heavy humanitarian situation in the country’s occupied territories; thanked the British side for participations in the EU monitoring mission; and underlined the importance of involvement of the international community.  
The two sides underlined that next year the parliamentary meetings will be held on a regular basis along the Wardrop Strategic Dialogue. In the frames of the visit, members of the British parliament will meet the Georgian President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament.

    Georgia is interested in moving its strategic partnership with the United States to a new level, which is one of the main priorities of the country’s foreign policy. In this regard, the importance of deepening economic relations between the two countries as well as developing trade and investment ties, including the possibility of concluding a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, was stressed. It was also noted that the launching of direct flights between Georgia and the United States will help to further deepen bilateral economic relations.

    Levan Davitashvili noted that it is very important, in general, that Congress expresses clear support for the deepening of cooperation with Georgia, and this is a very clear message. According to him, there is a desire on the part of the Congressmen to implement more joint projects with Georgia.

    Ilia Darchiashvili, the former Head of the Government Administration, has been appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on Monday.

    Darchiashvili replaced David Zalkaliani who has been appointed Georgia’s Ambassador to the United States.

    Ilia Darchiashvili served as Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Poland, and as Ambassador-at-Large before that. He has years of experience in diplomatic work.

    At different times, Ilia Darchiashvili served as First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund, while previously having been engaged in the private sector. Ilia Darchiashvili is a graduate of Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University and a holder of a master’s degree in business administration from Grenoble Graduate School of Business, France.

    “It is unacceptable to discuss any referendum while Georgia’s territory is occupied by Russia. No referendum will have any legal force amid the occupation, especially against the backdrop of hundreds of thousands of our citizens being expelled from their homes as a result of the ethnic cleansing and not being allowed to return” - the Georgian Vice Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani said at a joint briefing following his meeting with his Danish counterpart, Jeppe Kofod.
    The Georgian Foreign Minister said that the Government will not allow Georgia to be dragged into provocations or the dire consequences of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War to repeat again.
    Zalkaliani stressed that Georgia remains consistent with and committed to its policy of peaceful de-occupation. “We will not use force to restore territorial integrity, this is our legal obligation, which the international community clearly supports” – he added.
    According to Zalkaliani, Georgia remains committed to the engagement policy and is ready to share the benefits of EU integration with those Georgian citizens who live on the other side of the occupation line.
