One of the leaders of United National Movement Sergo Ratiani talks about strategic ally treason and says that the fact that Georgian delegation didn’t take part in the resolution of Ukraine’s adoption in PACE session is treason of the ally. As Ratiani said, Georgia will pay a high price for it.
“This is a treason of our strategic partner and interests. Georgia will pay a high price for it. These days the government behaves badly in the international arena. What the Georgian delegation made, is shameful ", - said Ratiani.

Georgian Police detained Nika Melia, the largest opposition party leader, in the early morning of February 23 during a special operation at the United National Movement headquarters.

Law enforcers stormed the office building where Melia, fellow opposition leaders and supporters have been gathered following the Court’s February 17 order for pretrial detention.

Varying media reports said police used either tear gas or pepper spray when entering Melia’s cabinet by force, as live footage showed opposition supporters coughing.

“This is the end of this government. We are firm and united in our faith,” Melia asserted in the moments ahead of his detention. The opposition leader called PM Garibashvili and Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili “traitors,” adding that “no Georgian should be tried in court” for protesting a Russian MP's presence in the country's legislature.

The Interior Ministry said it used  “proportional force and special means” during the operation, arguing opposition supporters “resisted” law enforcers despite “numerous warnings.” Law enforcers also detained 21 persons, including UNM member Giorgi Baramidze,  under Article 173 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, involving disobedience of police orders.

A statement on Kobakhidze's resignation was read out to journalists in Tbilisi on June 21 by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the secretary-general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, after a meeting of the party leadership.

Although Kobakhidze was standing in the briefing room while the statement was being read out to journalists, he left the room without making any comment.

Georgian opposition leaders earlier on June 21 vowed to return to the streets of Tbilisi on the evening of June 21 to call for the resignations of I. Kobakhidze and Georgia's interior minister.

Demonstrators also are demanding early parliamentary elections in response to the political crisis that has erupted following the overnight violence.

Grigol Vashadze, chairman of the United National Movement party, called for demonstrators to gather for a rally beginning at 7 p.m. local time near the parliament building where the clashes occurred overnight.

Irakli Kobakhidze was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament on November 18, 2016.

MP Archil Talakvadze is expected to replace I. Kobakhidze.
