Reception at US Military Aircraft “Harry Truman”

Special reception for distinguished guests was held on US military aircraft “Harry Truman” in Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. Defence Minister Tinatin Khidasheli, Chief of General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Major General Vakhtang Kapanadze and his deputy, Colonel Nikoloz Agladze attended the event. Marine attaché of the embassy of U.S. to Georgia, LTC William J. Conner, Defence Ministry and Chief of Defence of Bulgaria, as well as Minister of Home Affairs and National Security of Malta and other officials also visited the American aircraft.
The distinguished guests viewed aviation and equipment on the aircraft, they familiarized with the structure and working principle of the military aircraft and attended the air show specially arranged for the guests. By the end of the event the representative of the American aircraft “Harry Truman” handed over presents for cooperation and partnership to the Georgian guests.

  • Defence Minister delivers a lecture in the Occupation Museum

    Minister of Defence of Georgia Levan Izoria delivered a lecture in the framework of the Project “No to Occupation”. In his address to the representatives of Gori and Kaspi self-governing bodies, non-governmental organizations and local students, Levan Izoria highlighted the implemented and planned defence reforms.

    Minister focused on the challenges currently faced by Georgia and the threats expected from Russia, which, according to Minister`s words, is a real problem not only for Georgia and but for the whole western world. Minister Levan Izoria, in consideration of the current threats, underlined significance of the practical steps undertaken by Georgia and emphasized NATO deterrence policy.

    One of the key topics of the conversation was the reforms carried out in the field of defence with the aim of strengthening Georgia`s defence capabilities. Minister also informed the attendees about the Georgia Defence Readiness Programme (GDRP), which is implemented in cooperation with Georgia`s strategic partner- the United States. When talking about the Georgian foreign policy priorities, Minister reviewed NATO-Georgia cooperation, Georgia`s Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations and different aspects of Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP). Levan Izoria also presented the future plans of the Ministry of Defence, in particular, the basic components of Total Defence Concept. Later on the meeting went on in a question and answer format. The questions asked to Minister concerned compulsory military service, reserve and mobilization system, the current situation on the occupied territories and Georgia`s NATO membership prospects.

    The meeting with Minister of Defence was held under the support of the organization “Bridge of Friendship-Kartlosi” in the multi-profile school of Kaspi Municipality where the Occupation Museum is located.

  • Defence Minister: Georgia will continue contribution to global security along with strategic partners

    “Georgia will continue contribution to global security along with strategic partners “– declared Minister of Defence of Georgia Levan Izoria during his visit to the Federal Republic of Germany. Minister of Defence of Georgia attended the pre-deployment training of the Georgian Unit in the Army Combat Training Center in Magdeburg and received positive evaluation about the level of preparedness of the Georgian contingent.

    The Georgian delegation led by the Defence Minister Levan Izoria was hosted by the commander of the Training Center who made presentation of the facility and training stages of the Georgian unit. Company of the III Infantry Brigade of the Georgian Armed Forces started trainings with the help of the German instructors in Magdeburg Training Center in January. Training course included mechanized, platoon and company level exercises. The Georgian military unit is ready for the mission and will start the peacekeeping mission under the German command in Mazar-i-Sharif in the nearest future.

    During three-day visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, Defence Minister of Georgia will meet his German counterpart Ursula von der Leyen. Meetings are scheduled with the Academic Director of the German Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS) in Berlin, Karl-Heinz Kamp and Under-Secretary for Foreign and Security Policy of the Chancellor of Germany Christoph Heusgen.

  • Deputy Secretary General addresses NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Tbilisi

    Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller outlined the decisions taken by Allied leaders last week in a keynote speech to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Tbilisi on Monday (29 May 2017). She highlighted that the Alliance is stepping up in the fight against terrorism and making progress on fairer burden-sharing across NATO.

    The Deputy Secretary General welcomed that NATO is now a full member of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS – a strong symbol of the Alliance’s commitment to the fight against terrorism. NATO AWACS surveillance aircraft will also support the Coalition with airspace management, and a new terrorism intelligence cell at NATO headquarters will improve the sharing of information among Allies. Ms. Gottemoeller stressed that NATO leaders also agreed to do more to ensure fairer burden sharing across the Alliance, with national plans setting out how Allies intend to meet their defence commitments. She highlighted that Montenegro will soon become the 29th member of the Alliance – a clear sign that the door to NATO membership remains open.

     The Deputy Secretary General also thanked Georgia for its contributions to NATO, including in Afghanistan. She noted that NATO continues to support Georgia, helping to boost its defence capabilities and to prepare the country for NATO membership. Ms. Gottemoeller added that NPA members play an important role in representing constituents and holding political leaders to account for the decisions they take.

    During her visit to Georgia, Ms. Gottemoeller will meet with Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze, Defence Minister Levan Izoria and the Chairman of the Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze.

     

  • Defence Minister met with Chairman of NATO Military Committee
    The ongoing reform process in the field of defence, the progress achieved in defence transformation and the tasks to be implemented in future were the key topics Minister of Defence of Georgia highlighted during the meeting with Chairman of NATO Military Committee General Petr Pavel. In the framework of two-day visit of the NATO MS delegation, General Petr Pavel held the first meeting in Ministry of Defence attended by First Deputy Minister Lela Chikovani, Chief of the GS of the GAF Brigadier General Vladimer Chachibaia and Head of the Georgian Mission to NATO Aleksandre Maisuradze. Security situation and challenges faced by Georgia, its engagement in the context of Black Sea security were focused on during discussions. As Defence Minister underlined, Georgia is the most interoperable and reliable partner of NATO in the region providing a significant contribution to the Euro-Atlantic and international security operations. The sides also stressed importance of NATO-Georgia cooperation mechanisms and Substantial NATO-Georgia Package implementation. Minister Levan Izoria thanked NATO MS Chairman for significant practical assistance provided by NATO nations promoting enhancement of defence capabilities of the GAF and NATO interoperability According to Minister, senior military authority of NATO conducted the meeting in Georgia for the second time in Georgia`s history which is a visible demonstration for its unwavering support towards Georgia`s sovereignty, territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The meeting with General Petr Pavel and senior NATO military representatives continued in an extended format. After the meeting, Minister and Chairman of NATO Military Committee held a press-conference with media representatives and answered the questions around NATO-Georgia cooperation and future plans of partnership.
